"I can give you the title of 'girlfriend' or 'fiancée.' I can also give you money, a house, and a car," Jeremy slowly said. "You can keep holding on to your fantasies, but to be honest, I think that's foolish." After saying this, he turned and walked away.
Melody was still weak from the lack of oxygen. She tightly gripped the table beside her just to stay standing.
But when Jeremy was about to step through the doorway, she couldn't hold back and raised her voice, calling after him, "Jeremy, let's end this relationship, alright?"
Her entire body trembled, even her voice shook. She knew clearly that what she and Jeremy wanted were fundamentally different things.
Yet, Jeremy only paused briefly at the doorway. Then, he glanced back at her without a hint of emotion, neither agreeing nor disagreeing. He simply said, "You'd better think carefully about it."
Then, he walked out without looking back.
Melody felt as if all her strength had drained away. She slowly slid down along the table and finally curled up on the floor.
She tightly hugged her knees. She had to breathe deeply and deliberately just to ease the suffocating ache in her chest.
...
Things seemed to reach a stalemate. Melody and Jeremy's relationship seemed to have fallen into a strange, tense situation.
Ophelia was the first to notice that something was wrong. After dinner that night, she took Melody for a stroll on the beach.
Melody appeared gloomy and distracted. Every time Jeremy came up in conversation, she quickly changed the subject.
Helpless, Ophelia eventually said, "Go get some rest."
Feeling guilty, Melody replied, "I'm sorry, Ophelia. I..."
But Ophelia gently waved her off. "It's alright. I understand."
After Melody left, Ophelia immediately went to find Jeremy.
She got straight to the point. "What exactly is going on between you and Melody?"
Jeremy paused and said, "Nothing."
Ophelia gave a cold laugh. "Melody practically wants to run away whenever she sees you. During dinner, she didn't even dare lift her head. And you're telling me nothing's wrong?"
