Jeremy had the night shift that day, and he still wasn't home the next afternoon. Melody thought she'd skip lunch altogether since she wasn't hungry.
However, Ophelia showed up at her doorstep. She brought some food that she had made and was gentle when she spoke to Melody.
"Melody, try my dish, okay? You've lost too much weight lately." The sympathy in her eyes was as genuine as they were deep.
"I've been busy with something for the past two days. A friend of mine is coming back from abroad, and I've been making some arrangements for her. That's why I haven't been able to find any free time to visit you.
"When she comes, I'll introduce her to you. She's also in the medical industry, and she's such a kind soul. I think you two will hit it off right away."
Being able to tell that Ophelia was trying to comfort her, Melody responded in a grateful tone, "I appreciate it."
Ophelia responded, "Don't worry. Jeremy is already sussing out the mastermind behind this incident. We won't let him off the hook when we have the answer. I won't tolerate anyone picking on you this ruthlessly!"
As soon as she said that, Jeremy arrived home. He had a stack of documents and wasn't surprised to see Ophelia here.
Instead, he explained to Melody, "A patient was transferred to our hospital at the last minute. I had to perform a surgery and got delayed until now."
She looked at him and nodded solemnly. "Sounds like a tough day."
Putting down her spoon, she got up and added, "I'll leave you and Ophelia to catch up a little, and take Echo out for a walk in the neighborhood.
"Your dish is delicious, Ophelia. Thank you." It was pretty obvious that she was avoiding Ophelia.
Ophelia couldn't help but sigh as she watched Melody put on a mask and a flat cap, wrapping herself up. The moment Melody was gone, the air in the room immediately shifted.
Raising her gaze, Ophelia looked at Jeremy. "You've done right this time, I guess. If Matthew runs into any dead ends in his investigation, feel free to call me."
He nonchalantly rejected, "I don't need your help."
His cold and distant tone was hard to take in, but she didn't retort to him with an even icier response, which was uncharacteristic of her.
