Jeremy slowly furrowed his eyebrows as he hung up the phone. As it happened, Melody came back with Echo in her arms, whimpering in a spoiled and affectionate way.
She asked, "Has Ophelia left?"
He hummed in response, not saying anything about the investigation's findings. He had some verification to do.
Melody didn't notice anything unusual about him. If she was being honest, she was distracted by the guilt in her heart. Ophelia came here to comfort her out of the goodness in her heart, yet she avoided Ophelia.
The thing was, she didn't have the energy to deal with anyone, let alone their well-meaning concerns and worries. The only thing she could do was explain it to Ophelia after the whole thing blew over.
Andrew had never expressed any concern since Melody was injured. He didn't even give her a call.
The only response, if one could call it that, was an official announcement by the Regallo Charity Foundation. It explicitly stated that she got into Jembina School of Medicine on her own merit.
…
Denvin didn't get in touch with Melody until several days had passed. He asked to meet with her at a coffeehouse outside her apartment, and she didn't reject him.
By the time she arrived, he had ordered her a glass of fruit juice. He must've come straight from the company, judging by his deep-colored formal wear. Incidentally, it masked the unruly air he naturally radiated.
Jeremy told Melody that Denvin lent him a hand with removing the trending topic on the internet. Pursing her lips, she broke the silence, saying, "Denvin, I appreciate your help."
He raised his gaze and looked at her, emotionless, as if she meant something insignificant.
"I merely had to spend some money to make it go away. As I said, the Celestial Group's witness must not have a tarnished reputation."
Lowering her head, she apologized, "I'm sorry. It seems like I made it worse."
Denvin had reminded her about it, but she had the nerve to say that she could handle the matter. In the end, this was what she had to show for it.
He tapped the table with his lean fingers. As he slightly raised his head, there were dark emotions flickering in his narrowed eyes.
Moments later, he clicked his tongue. "Jeremy couldn't even get something this simple under control. What do you see in him?"
All Jeremy had to do was keep Melody safe. What was so hard about it?
She didn't say anything to him. Denvin and Jeremy had always had a shaky relationship, at best. At worst, they couldn't stand each other at all.
She asked, "There's another reason you asked to see me today, right?"
Denvin raised an eyebrow and scoffed. "Couldn't it be because I care about you?"
