Denvin had always made it his mission to get Melody to leave the Wardolf family.
She wasn't an eloquent speaker. So, she had no idea how to respond to him. The only thing she could do was to pretend as if she hadn't heard him.
Denvin stared at her. Those around him had always commented that he was reckless and morally ambiguous when running his business.
He had a sense of unruliness about him. To begin with, he already had sharp, striking features. His cheekbones were deep, and his demeanor was so intense that people didn't dare to look him in the eyes.
Denvin's gaze was fixed on Melody. Something popped into his mind, and he suddenly chuckled. Then, he said casually, "You won't be able to marry Jeremy."
Melody raised her head and met his mocking gaze. An inexplicable emotion rose in her chest, but she couldn't retort to Denvin's words.
Andrew and Laura didn't come downstairs until half an hour later.
He glanced at Melody, saying, "Jeremy and Krys can't come home tonight. It's just the four of us. So, we won't be having a huge dinner. Is that alright for you, Mel?"
Melody didn't have the right to be picky, so she responded meekly, "Anything is fine by me."
Laura glanced at her and asked indifferently, "Not putting makeup on tonight, are we?"
"I had makeup on last time because I had a photography session," Melody explained softly.
"You look cheap and tacky, to begin with. Using makeup just makes it worse. Don't even bother with it next time. You'll just waste them."
Melody grew up listening to these undermining remarks. She lowered her gaze and told herself not to be offended by them.
…
When they were all seated at the dining table, Andrew did not beat around the bush, questioning, "I'm aware that Tessa's case was resolved. Why did I hear that Ophelia gave you a helping hand?"
Melody responded truthfully, "She helped me investigate Rosario."
Andrew immediately looked irritated. "Mel, you shouldn't have done that. Ophelia is fond of you. That's for sure, but you can't accept her goodwill. People will think that you're trying to get something from her."
…
Melody didn't have much of a chance to talk throughout the whole dinner. Instead, Andrew and Laura dominated the conversation, berating her the whole time.
When it was finally over, she wanted to make up an excuse and leave.
However, he suddenly asked, "Mel, how are things with you and Jeremy lately? Is he still lukewarm to you?"
Andrew was probably the first father in the world to tell his daughter that her fiancé didn't want to be with her. Granted, Melody was merely his adoptive daughter.
She clenched her fists, about to respond, when she heard the engine sound from the door. It was Krystal returning home, and Jeremy was with her.
Jeremy was tall and slender, but was far from being skinny or frail. A thin layer of muscles clung to his perfect proportions, making him look powerful and forming a striking outline.
Melody looked at the door, and she accidentally met his gaze.
