Gabriel found this to be nonsense. Why was this suddenly an issue when it happened a while ago?
"How much did Lord Blackthorn pay you to look into this? He is only doing it to take some of the heat off of Selene because she killed my mother," said Gabriel.
"I am not a man bought by Lord Blackthorn. I am already dealing with him and what he is accused of. Your accusation of him killing your mother or it being Selene doesn’t mean what you have done can be overlooked," Eugene said, hoping Gabriel would drop his act.
Gabriel wasn’t someone who couldn’t be questioned.
"Which reminds me. Concerning the missing man Oliver Carleton, some people I spoke to said that during the time before he went around speaking about your ex-wife, a deal was made between the two of you," Eugene shared.
From what Eugene heard at first, Fiona and Oliver were close to Selene but Gabriel having a conversation with Oliver about spreading rumours of things Selene might have said or done in exchange for money was something worth looking into.
How foolish was Gabriel to speak about that in the open where vampires could overhear him?
This town thrived on gossip but when the town guards were going around searching for the missing man and speaking to those who last saw him, anyone would point out Gabriel to free themselves from danger.
Gabriel gritted his teeth. That talk he had with Oliver wasn’t to come back up. The town was meant to focus on what Oliver said about Selene but then Oliver went and disappeared.
Gabriel regretted not having Oliver visit his home to discuss the plan.
Still, Gabriel wasn’t worried.
"I didn’t kill him. It’s not wrong for me to offer money in exchange for what he knew about my ex-wife. Someone else must have gotten to him and we both know who it is," said Gabriel.
This was Xavier’s doing since Oliver spoke about Selene.
"You want me to believe that you suddenly turning this case on me is a mere confidence? It sounds like you have been bought by that bastard. I didn’t kill Oliver," Gabriel said, annoyed he was even suspected.
"Did you pay him?"
Gabriel laughed. "He went from walking around like a beggar to acting like he was a noble. Of course, I paid him."
"And what about his wife? I knew she came here but now she is dead," Eugene shared.
Gabriel wasn’t aware Fiona took his advice to die. She was a foolish woman after all. He only said that to get her out of his sight.
Eugene noticed Gabriel wasn’t quick to argue that he was innocent when it came to Fiona. Eugene was certain that Xavier wasn’t innocent when it came to Oliver but now, Gabriel was suspicious because of how he reacted to Fiona’s death.
"That wasn’t me. She came here thinking I would help prove Selene killed her husband and I turned her away. We weren’t friends for me to help her. She was Selene’s friend," said Gabriel.
"I see. I still need to speak to your wife about the maid. I want this case to be done with so I can look into other important matters," Eugene said, tired of seeing Gabriel and the Blackthorns.
Gabriel now saw Eugene as just the man he wanted to speak to. "How can I help with finding the culprits behind the recent attacks?"
