Nora and Benjamin were seated at the reception area of the emergency ward, waiting for the doctor to come out to update them on Annie's condition.
Tears rolled down Nora's cheeks as she silently prayed for Annie and the baby's safety. She knew how bad Eric wanted this baby and losing the baby will break him and Annie who was already attached to the little one.
The ambulance arrived six minutes after Nora's call and they brought her to Saint Mary's hospital.
"Nora, how is she? Is she going to be fine? How's the baby?" Eric asked with tear-filled eyes. His hair was scattered. You could tell he ran his hand through it so many times. He was in his office clothes but without his jacket. The first two buttons of his shirt were undone and below was his tired tie.
"We are still waiting for the doctor to give us an update. He should be out soon." Nora said as she wiped her tears. The more she wiped them, the more they kept falling.
Eric sighed as he began pacing up and down the reception area, praying for the worst not to happen. He was about to leave the jewellery shop when he received Nora's call. Immediately she told him what had happened, his heart sank. Nora had to beg him to drive safely on his way to the hospital.
About eight minutes later, the doctor came out of the emergency room. It wasn't Doctor Myers but another young Doctor with dark hair.
"How are they?" Eric swallowed painfully.
"The lady is fine but she lost the baby. I'm so sorry. She was brought in late hence there was no chance for us to save him or her. I will let you know when you can see her."
Eric stood still. It was as if the reason for his living had been taken away from him. Why? Why was life this cruel? hot tears rolled down his cheeks as he slid down the wall, sat on the floor, buried his face in his hands and cried.
Bernard squatted to his left to comfort his Boss. Since he started working for Eric, he has never seen him this broken.
Nora who was sobbing uncontrollably decided to give Eric her support too. She squatted by his right side and gently patted his back.
"I'm so sorry, Eric." She swallowed painfully. There was nothing more painful than losing a child. She knew there was nothing she could say that would take Eric's pain away. But still, She wanted to be there for him.
"Please be strong. I know it's not easy but I believe you can go through this. Remember you have to be strong for Annie; she will need you now more than ever. I'm sure she will try to push you away, blaming herself for what happened but please don't let that happen. I believe in what both of you feel for each other. I believe you two will go through this." She said in tears as Eric sobbed even more.
Nora and Bernard tried to console Eric for over twenty minutes. They succeeded in making him sit on a chair and they sat beside him.
"Thank you." He said with a shaky voice. His eyes were red and his face flushed from crying. "I appreciate your support."
"No need to thank us son. We'll always be here for you." Bernard said.
"You can go home now; I'll stay with Annie for the night. I'll call you if I need anything."
"You sure? We can stay with you." Nora offered.
"I'll be fine. Thanks."
Eric reached for his wallet. He wanted to give them some cash to transport them back home. They came with the ambulance and had no way to go back home. He wasn't sure if they had money on them. Everything was just sudden.
"Don't worry about that, Son. We can manage." Bernard declined his gesture.
"You sure?" He asked and Bernard nodded. He pays them well for their services, takes care of their food and housing. Darn, their salary was even more than enough.
"Does mom know?" He said.
"No she doesn't, Just you, Nora and Bernard. I'll inform the rest tomorrow," he replied.
"You sure you don't need me there? I don't mind spending the night at the hospital." he offered.
"Don't worry Dylan but thanks anyway."
"Okay, bro. I'll come to see you tomorrow before I go to work."
"Okay. Bye."
As soon as Eric ended the call, a nurse came to him and directed him to Annie's ward.
Remembering he has to be strong for her, he wiped his tears before he walked into her room. The ward was one of those VIP wards which were made to the patient's comfort.
Annie's back was turned from the entrance. Eric could hear her soft cry as soon as he stepped into her ward and it broke his heart.
"Annie."He called out her name and she sobbed even more. He took a seat beside her, scooped her upper body in his chest and hugged her. Her eyes were red and her face flushed and puffy from crying.
"I'm so sorry. Our baby is no more because of me, I'm so sorry Eric." She sobbed. Eric did not say anything, Instead, he embraced her more and patted her back. He was in tears also. He knew they needed this. They needed to let it out. They needed to mourn the loss of the little miracle they never had the chance to meet.
