Maria handed her an ice pack. After an hour of icing, the swelling still throbbed painfully, especially when she tried to slip into her heels- it felt like pinpricks. 

Cold sweat drenched her forehead quickly, but she forced herself to continue putting on makeup. 

Maria, seeing her like this, couldn’t bear it. 

“Ms. Pennyfeather, why don’t I call Holden and have you go another day?” 

“I have to go” 

The main purpose of this party was to please Grandpa Holden. He had been so good to her, and she had already missed his pickup- she couldn’t disappoint him again on such an important occasion. After finishing her makeup, she put on the bracelet Holden had given her. Other than that, she didn’t wear any other jewelry. 

But she was naturally elegant, and with this waist–accentuating dress, the emerald bracelet on her wrist made her look even more charming. 

Once she was ready. Maja stopped dawdling and got in the car. 

Not long after the car started, she got a call from Neil, asking her to swing by the Pennyfeather family’s old home to pick up Tricia.
