"I wasn't asking," he says. Of course that's what he says. He starts heading for the window. "Make sure you close this properly."

I roll my eyes. "I will." I don't need him to tell me that. I have common sense.

As he's moving to step out, the light reflects on the black uniform he's wearing, and I see a hint of red along his back.

My eyes widen. "Aiden."

"What now?" He looks back at me.

I hesitate. Did I imagine it? No, I'm sure that was blood. "Are you okay?"

He doesn't say anything for a while. I try to move closer to him.

"Someone's coming," he says nonchalantly, completely ignoring me. He moves out of the window carefully, skillfully.

But before he can disappear, I move in front of him. "You know what I... appreciate most about you Aiden?" I don't wait for him to respond. I don't give him time to leave. "It's your honesty. So tell me now if you're okay. Really."

He stares into my eyes with his cold ones for a while, as if he's looking for something. I don't know what it is but I don't look away. Finally he says, "No, I'm not okay. I'm just climbing down the side of a house."

I have half a mind to shove him down myself. To think I was worried about him for even a second. I move away from the window.

"Mia," he says.

I turn back around about to give him a piece of my mind, but before he or I can say anything, the doorknob moves.

He's gone.

"All I'm saying is that if our secret gets out, we'll have no one to blame but this reckless, irresponsible, unfit human," one of the elders spits out in my direction.
