That doesn't make sense, but I guess I get what he means. "It's okay, really. Just don't come." The last thing I need is him and Aiden waking my whole house up.
"What?" he asks.
"We're really not doing anything," I say. "We just kissed. And now we're going to sleep, so."
"Good!" he says. "That's a great opportunity to show you how not jealous I am. I'll just take the other side of the bed and-"
"I miss you," I say out of nowhere.
Without any hesitation, he says, "I miss you too." I can hear the smile in his voice. "Why'd you say that though?"
I lean against the phone a bit. "I don't want you to think that I don't want you here."
"Well, of course," he chuckles.
I roll my eyes. "It's just, Aiden said you guys are supposed to be in the next town over. Is it a good idea for both of you to be missing at the same time?"
He stays quiet for a while.
"Carson?" I ask.
Another sigh. "No. It isn't."
I know he wouldn't believe me, but I'm as disappointed as he sounds.
"So I should stay, right?" he asks, but it's more of a rhetorical question to himself.
I nod, even though he can't see me. "Aiden's gonna be heading that way soon anyway, once I fall asleep. But we can hang out tomorrow," I offer. "When you get back. Just the two of us."
"I've got training at the school," he says.
I frown.
"But I'm sure we can figure something out," he says.
The smile's back on my face. "Okay." Then a thought comes to mind. Training at the school? That reminds me of that one guard I met with Bri and Krys. The one who jumped over the railing and called me luna. He was so nice.
And he also was in the meeting with the elders, so he must have some kind of social standing in the pack. Maybe he could work as my "spy."
"Actually, Carson," I start. "Maybe I could go to school with you tomorrow?"
"Yeah?" he asks.
I nod, even though he can't see me. "I've never seen training in action before."
"Yeah?" He sounds even more excited. "Okay, but you can't participate because I don't want your heart to go crazy."
I chuckle. "Okay."
"So I'll see you tomorrow?" he asks.
"Yup." I lean against my pillow.
He sounds so much better than when he first answered the phone. "Okay, goodnight."
I smile. "Goodnight."
"Oh, and remind Aiden not to fall asleep there," he says. "Make sure you tell him."
"Okay. I will." I won't. He's so territorial. I wait for him to hang up.
He never does.
