I tell her what I tell myself in those moments with Aiden, or sometimes even with Axel or Carson. "What else can you do, Bri?" I shrug. "She needs you. You need her, bond or not. You've just gotta do the best you can and hope it's enough."
"But it's not enough," she says. "I've done nothing but ruin her life. I'm no good for her."
"Well the lunar energy thinks you are," I say.
She furrows her brow. "The what?"
"The mate bond. The lunar destiny." I gesture towards the air around us, swatting it. "The attraction reaction."
She tries not to laugh, glaring at me. "Stop it. I'm angry."
"What I'm saying is." I smile. "You're so worried about what you think she feels that you can't trust her as an individual to know for herself."
She raises an eyebrow.
Let me try again. "You want her to have free will, but you don't trust her decisions. How does that work?" That hit a little too close to home for me. I clear my throat, trying to focus on my friend. "I guess what I'm saying is, I think that out of all the alphas and all the betas you guys spend the most time together. But you're just compensating."
"Compensating for what?" she asks.
I hate to say it, but I have to. "For having the worst mindlink connect ever."
"Ouch," she says.
I give her a sympathetic look, but it's the truth.
She glares at me. "What are you now, the werewolf whisperer?"
"Yes," I say.
"Alright, Cesar Millan." She rolls her eyes, walking through the gym door.
I try not to laugh. When we make it to the locker room, Krys raises an eyebrow. Her eyes scream, what did she say? What did she say? What did she say?
They're hopeless. I sigh, giving her a thumbs up. Her previously bitter expression transforms into a grinning, blushing mess.
"What's wrong with her now?" Bri mutters.
I don't have time to answer before I'm ambushed.
Dozens of girls in the locker room are dumbfounded. "Is that..." They step closer, sniffing. "Aiden's hoodie?"
I don't say anything.
"Did he give you that?" they gasp. What? When? Where? How? Why? Who again? Surely not Aiden. Details. Details. Details.
I plead the fifth.
"Alright, alright. Nothing to see here ladies." Bri staves them off like a pack of wild animals.
"Back you nosy beasts of burden." Krys helps her out. "Back, I say." She smiles when Bri looks at her.
Bri looks even more confused, but she doesn't ask about the sudden change in mood.
