They just get it. Nothing will ever be good enough for my mate.
"I'll see you tomorrow," Mia says.
I don't wanna let her go.
Aiden's POV
There's always a calm before the storm. It's like Murphy's Law or something. Anything that can go wrong, will. So forgive me for staring at Mia like she's a bomb waiting to explode.
When Krys forced us all to watch TFIOS (The Fault in Our Stars) for the first time, I thought it was ridiculous. The notion that one person could be a grenade... but then my mom was, when she died.
I listen to Mia's heart now constantly. I make her go to the nurse once a week, like that'll keep her alive. I double check, then triple check, then quadruple check the guard shifts because I can't mess this up. I can't make a mistake. I can't even sleep at night.
All I do is wish she was beside me again, holding me, but I can't trust myself not to hurt her.
"Aiden."
I snap out of it, looking around.
Mia's staring at me in the middle of chemistry.
"What?" I ask.
She looks at my eyes, and I can tell they've changed. She looks like she wants to ask, but decides against it.
She shakes her head, turning back to Onai to carry on their conversation (more like her talking his ears off and him grunting every now and again). When she's confused, she asks him questions. She waits for him to give her the answers (answers I already know), right in front of the whole class. Like everyone can't hear them.
I almost can't believe it's happening. Axel's beta disrespecting me in public by taking care of my ma-
Mia, I mean. I mean, I don't mean, my Mia. I just mean... you know what? Who cares. She wants to bother Onai? Great. Perfect. Less work for me.
I go back to my thoughts. She goes back to, apparently, her only lab partner. When class is over, she says, "See you at lunch, Onai."
He nods before leaving.
Without even sparing me a glance (that I most certainly would not have reciprocated), this girl walks towards Mr. Olcan's room just so she can go be with Axel. Like always. Axel.
"Class was good today," she has the audacity to say over her shoulder in the middle of the hall.
My mouth starts moving before my mind registers what it's planning, "You must really like talking to people who don't care about what you're saying." Even I wonder if that was the best... It doesn't matter. It's too late to take it back. I give her a hard look.
She just waves me off, calmly. "No, that's just the way Onai is. He cares. He just doesn't like talking too much."
