Ditched Cheating Alpha, I Led My Daughter to Life's Peak novel Chapter 267

I give him a look not to interrupt. I want to ask, we all do, but we shouldn't. We should let her speak, because there's a reason she's bringing it up today of all days. In this class of all places. It hurts like hell to hear that I wasn't there for her in her time of need. That none of us were, and we didn't even sense that something was wrong, but that's just something we're gonna have to deal with.

Finally, Mia shakes her head. "Nothing happened. Onai and Mr. Reynolds saved me. I told you that."

I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel relieved, breathed in like I'd never felt oxygen before.

But Carson doesn't look relieved in the slightest. I know why. To him, her even having been in that situation was too much. It doesn't matter how far it went or didn't. How long ago it was or wasn't. All he's thinking about is the fact that someone had the nerve to touch our mate. Someone actually managed to put their hands on our mate. He takes her hand, holding on for dear life. I know why.

Because it almost happened again, a few days ago in the middle of the night. During Bri and Krys' watch. I've never seen Carson run like that. I've never run like that. Aiden...

Now it's just another secret we should've told Mia, but can't anymore without starting a fight.

She keeps talking. "My point is, after that happened, Onai said something about the guy. That he couldn't tell what pack he was from."

Dawn. It couldn't be anyone else but Dawn. Onai had said that himself. It's not that they don't have a scent, it's just, we can only smell it when they want us to. When you encounter then, you know instantly who they are. But in a crowd, or walking through your territory at a distance...

"That's the reason why we can't let Dawn refugees in," Aiden says. "We'd have no way of tracking them if they went rogue."

"A baby?" she asks. "You can't keep track of a baby?" She's trying to keep her tone down, but I can tell she's upset.

"That baby has a mother," Aiden says. "And a sister. And a brother. And an aunt that its mother can't bare to live without. And a father." He looks into her eyes. "A father who won't trust his wife, and daughter, and son, and baby to be alone in a pack he knows nothing about. So he won't let them go without going to." Aiden goes back to his already finished assignment. "The answer is no. We can't keep track of babies."

Mia sighs, forcefully, sitting back in her chair. Her dark brown eyes wander over Aiden before landing on me. She tightens her grip on Carson's hand. "... I guess you're right."

Aiden looks up, but she's already staring at her paper again. Drawing the border to our territory.
