"Not necessarily," Krys says. "They're refugees. Not rogues, so we could argue-"
"Their pack are not gonna take them back," Coach Kenet says.
Carson nods. "They can call themselves whatever they want. But they're packless."
"What does it matter now?" Bri asks. "It's too late to take it back, so we might as well be honest rogue sympathizers and give them what our luna said we would."
What have I done? No wonder they never brought me here before. I just screwed our lives up in one sentence!
"One water bottle each," Coach Kenet says. "Take it or leave it."
The refugees look at each other, discussing it in their heads. Finally, one of them turns to me. "Can we get some food too?"
"Er..." I don't think I should say anything else. I look at Carson, raising an eyebrow. It's his call honestly. Or Aiden's. I don't really care, as long as it's not mine.
"I... Guess," Carson drags out the last word like a question mark. But when I smile (because yay! I'm not the only one digging our grave), he nods vigorously-much to Aiden's horror. "Yeah. Sure."
"What did you just say?" Aiden asks.
"Oh come on."Carson gives him a look. "If we're already giving them water, what's the problem?"
"... We shouldn't be giving them water," Aiden says.
Carson nudges him. "It's just a small snack. For the kids." The thousand watt smile he gives Aiden could charm the birds out of the trees. All the birds except Aiden, who looks completely unimpressed.
The refugee group pauses, eyeing each other suspiciously. "Well in that case..."
I expect them to be grateful, not because we're giving them a lot (which we're not), but because I'm working to make sure Aiden doesn't attack them. But oh no. They start asking for even more.
My mouth falls open.
Carson's does too. "Are they really trying their luck again?" he asks incredulously.
I furrow my brow, looking into his eyes. "I think they are."
