I can't see Onai, but I can feel him crouching in the same kneeling position as me. They haven't done anything to us since the blindfolds-but my hands itch at my sides to pull it away. To stop the crackling, bloodshot sensation spreading across my cheeks. I tried to slip my finger under it once-just to stratch. I won't do that again.
Suddenly, someone yanks my head back by my hair and pulls the blindfold off. I feel every fiber move against my skin, like a cat clawing against my face. My vision is hazy at first, but I can see two figures standing in front of.
"After weeks of failed attempts at finding a way into your pack," a deep, male voice projects over the open space of whatever room we're in. It doesn't feel like we're by the surface anymore. He keeps talking, "The universe delivers an invitation to me as an act of providence."
"We should accept it, shouldn't we, Alpha Kaiden?" asks a woman beside him. Her golden eyes flutter between Ethel and me.
"Accept what, Alpha Jenn? They just gave us two great pieces of bait." The male-Alpha Kaiden?- waves his hand and wolves instantly surround us. "Let's see what we can catch."
They push the blindfolds back down, and I feel the wind knocked out of me. For a moment, I can't tell if the pain's from me or Onai.
"Wait," the male alpha's voice sounds again. "Bring that one to me."
"What's wrong with him?" the woman asks.
He doesn't answer. When the people shoving me change my direction, my blood runs cold.
Mia's POV
Dad blocks the front door, arms crossed. "You know, you guys actually have to live in your own house sometimes."
"Gladly." Michael finishes tying his shoes and grabs his bookbag off the steps. "Just as soon as this project is over."
"Oh yeah. This project." Dad shoots Mom a look.
She sighs. "Hugh."
"They're lying to us." He flails his arms. "And we're enabling them."
"It's only been three days. You're acting like they're delinquents."
If he hears a word she says, he doesn't show any sign of it. He marches up to Michael. "Look. I know that..."
Michael groans.
"Listen to me." Dad raises his voice right before dropping it to infinitesimal levels. "I know you may not be interested in women, but doesn't Suzie's parents think it's a little weird for a guy to constantly be staying over their house? Even if Mia's there?"
"So, you want me to stay over a guy's house?" Michael asks.
Dad goes from 100 to infinity. "No."
"Alright then." Michael walks around him. "I'm going to go make sure I graduate, then."
"Michael. Jones," Dad yells after him, reaching his hand out dramatically.
He holds onto Mom, weighing her down as she moves upstairs. "It's happening! We've lost control of the house. They're taking over." He scans behind him, eyeing us like we're foreign invaders in his home. "We're outnumbered. Soon, Megan will be acting the same way."
Megan throws him a dirty look. "Leave me out of this, Hugh."
Dad's jaw drops, and I close the front door gently behind me.
Axel's POV
Aiden, Krys, Michael, and Carson are gathered around the kitchen table.
"If they don't come back, we need to be ready to send out troops," Carson says.
Krys shakes her head and points forcefully to a sheet of paper lying on the surface of the table. "That would give them the wrong idea."
"Do it discreetly, then," Aiden says.
"With the Dawn werewolves they have," Michael says, "I doubt there's such a thing as discreetly."
I stand in the opening of the kitchen, halfway between the table and the couch Mia and Shen are sitting on. Fei's coloring on the floor in front of them. I'm currently messaging our allies to call me-since Ethel isn't around to-but I'd be lying if I said my attention didn't shift to Shen as she leans closer to Mia whispering.
"If they're worried about Dawn, I could smell them out for you," she says.
