Mia raises an eyebrow. "Really?"
"That won't be necessary," Aiden says abruptly.
Shen falters. Even though they're in separate rooms and can't even see each other from where they are, the tension is thick. My gaze shifts between the two and the phone I'm supposed to be using.
Shen raises her voice, not in rude way but in order to speak at a normal volume now. Her eyes shift in the direction Aiden is. "I'm only offering because I'm a part of this pack now, and I want to help. I don't want to just sit around and do nothing while I wait for Ethel to get back."
"Absolutely not." Aiden gathers up all the papers.
"Aiden," Mia says.
Brittany gives Aiden a similar expression. "You still don't trust her?"
"Not at all." Aiden straightens the papers against the wood surface right before tucking them under his arm. "I won't trust her until I can hear every thought running through her head."
Mia frowns. "Can't you already? With mindlink?"
"We conveniently don't have access to hers yet. Still."Aiden speaks in a slow, deliberate, convicting way. "But we can hear Fei's loud and clear. I wonder why that is."
Krys waves him off. "You know it took like three weeks with me. Imprint transfers are weird. Give it time."
Aiden continues to eye Shen's direction suspiciously. "Let's just go to the office." And in typical Aiden fashion, he walks straight past Shen and up the stairs. The others awkwardly follow. Shen keeps a painfully straight face.
In my opinion, that's Aiden's only problem. If he doesn't trust someone, he makes it obvious. But then again, I suppose it can't be helped. Everyone knows he doesn't trust anyone. It's at that moment that I get a response from the Dusk Pack. I excuse myself to take the call.
Aiden's POV
"Where is she?" Dad groans, curled up in bed. Piles of uneaten food are scattered on the empty surfaces around him-his nightstand, the desk, my outstretched hands. I hand the bowl to him again, but he smacks it away. It slams on my foot. I wince, pulling away, but not before the soup splashes on my leg and stains his covers. I bite my tongue against the burn.
He yanks the sheets closer, burying himself further into them. The smell. The smell.
