It runs back to me then starts walking again, urging me on. I follow it slowly, trying to be as quiet as possible. It leads me around trees and roots. It follows one direction, then changes abruptly, speeding up. I try to follow its every twist and turn.
The growling starts to get louder behind me. The wolf speeds up. I do too. I feel something at my back. I start running. I don't look back. I can hear it, barreling behind me. I reach into my pocket. Not the one with the phone. The other one. The special one I've been carrying since that day in the backyard. I yank out my pepper spray and whip around.
I press as hard as I can for as long as I can. The wolf cries out and starts clawing at its eyes. I start to run away, but the smaller wolf doesn't budge. It stops, watching the bigger, pepper-sprayed one.
Oh no. This one does look pretty grey. And It's pretty big. Oh no, I've hit Onai! I reach towards him. "Onai, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize-"
Another wolf smacks into him, tearing up his side. I can't believe my eyes. "Get away from him," I cry out, spraying the other wolf. It backs away long enough for Onai to get a good wound to its side. Go Onai. Don't give up, even with your eyes gone.
I try to spray the enemy wolf again, but the small wolf at my side stops me.
... Uh oh, I've made a mistake again.
The bigger of the two wolves, the one I sprayed the second time, delivers a killing wound to the other and looks up at me with irritated eyes. Yeah, that one has to be Onai. Only he could give a look like that.
He rubs his eyes with his paws, grunting lowly. His side is bleeding pretty badly now, dying his grey fur. What if I've killed him because of a stupid mix up? This is why soldiers have distinct uniforms. It all makes sense now. He should've kept his clothes on.
"For the record, I thought that one was you," I say, staring at the dead wolf that was trying to kill me.
Onai rubs at his eyes one last time before leaning down beside me. He wants me to get on his back?
"Is that a good idea? You're hurt," I say. I reach towards him. He doesn't stop me, so I do as he asks. I ungraciously hop on top of him and grip onto his fur. He growls at a specific spot and I see teeth marks. I find another place to hold onto. I hope we can find help quick. He doesn't look too good. I guess I don't either, but I'm not the one bleeding out right now.
Once I'm securely on him, he runs-into a lot of trees. He clearly can't see that well, and the more blood he loses the slower he gets, but he's still insanely fast. He's still giving his all, and it may be weird to say this now that he's severely injured, but I trust him to keep me alive. We cross the forest quickly, but I still don't have any idea where he's taking us until we get there.
I stare at the door, shocked. "Are you sure?" I ask.
