Chapter 52
Hearing Selene’s excited tone, Joycelyn couldn’t help but ask, “What’s going on?”
She had left in a hurry and hadn’t noticed what had happened behind her.
Selene pulled off her mask, took a long gulp of water from a bottle, and then, with excitement in her voice, told Joycelyn:
“You know how we all thought Ms. Wilson and Mr. Grant were each other’s first love? Well, today Mr. Grant wore a light pink shirt, and we all thought he was getting a little love–struck.
“But then, he just went up to that rich girl and told her to her face, “That pink makes you look too old–fashioned. Don’t wear it again.”
When Selene mimicked Ellison’s voice for that last line, she puffed up her chest and tried to sound deep.
Joycelyn, who had just taken a sip of water to clear her throat, almost spat it out. She had to swallow quickly to avoid bursting out laughing.
“Did he really say that?” Joycelyn wiped her mouth, her face wide–eyed in disbelief.
Selene nodded furiously, her face lighting up with laughter.
“Yes! And he said it right in front of everyone. You wouldn’t believe it–there was so much tension in the air just then. If I were Ms. Wilson, I would’ve wanted to dig a hole and hide in it
Just imagining it made Joycelyn cringe with secondhand embarrassment.
“With the mood being so awkward outside, we’d better be careful, Joycelyn said, reluctantly.
She had a feeling Ellison wasn’t in a great mood today and didn’t want to risk drawing his ire.
She put on her mask snugly, only leaving her eyes visible, trying not to expose her identity.
He was a high–powered CEO, and his wife was here picking up trash at a party–she must be making him look bad.
Joycelyn was worried that he might seek her out later for some kind of reckoning.
“We don’t have to do anything.” Selene interrupted her thoughts, “Mr. Grant said he has a thing about cleanliness, so now everyone at the party is self–regulating. We don’t have to clean up anymore.”
“Wait, they’re letting those rich kids pick up the trash?” Joycelyn was taken aback.
She had seen the scene earlier and overheard some conversations.
The guys were talking about how much money they were making from their projects, while the rich girls were comparing their jewelry.
Letting those pampered rich kids do the cleaning? Ellison was clearly ready to alienate the entire upper crust.
“Yep,” Selene said, nodding. “Once Mr. Grant spoke up, no one dared oppose him. Now everyone’s too scared to move.”
a little uneasy after seeing the expression on Selene’s face. “Is it really that serious?” Joycelyn
Selene glanced around, lowered her voice, and said, “I just overheard someone saying that Mr. Grant’s parents died in a car

accident right after celebrating his birthday years ago.”
Joycelyn froze, completely shocked.
“Wait, what?” Her clear, sparkling eyes filled with sympathy.
She had always thought that Mr. Grant didn’t celebrate his birthday because he had lost his parents, but to find out they died on his birthday.. no wonder he avoided it
Anyone in that situation would probably never get over it.
Joycelyn couldn’t help but sigh.
“Mr. Grant really is the tragic, powerful, and domineering type,” Selene sighed too.
“I almost got convinced by your dedication when I saw you running around earlier. But who knew you’d be all gossiping, huh?”
“Well, you got me there.” Selene laughed and waved her hand, looking utterly comical.
“Besides Mr. Grant, I heard that two of his friends came back to the country today. That’s why all those rich girls were wearing their fancy gowns, looking to reel in a rich husband at this so–called alumni birthday party.”
As soon as Joycelyn heard that, she thought of Leon.
Ellison hadn’t exactly hidden the fact that they were friends… was Leon also one of them? That would be so embarrassing
Just then, a burst of crying and comforting voices floated in from outside.
The voices were clearly consoling Ruby, with phrases like, “Ms. Wilson, don’t be upset” floating through the air.
Joycelyn and Selene exchanged glances.
Without saying a word, they both slowed their pace and crept to the door to peek through the crack.
Ruby was surrounded by a group of rich girls, and they were all comforting her.
“Ruby, Mr. Grant saying that means he still cares about you. If he didn’t care, he wouldn’t say anything at all. Men always show these kinds of emotions when it comes to their exes,” Marissa Flynn, one of Ruby’s close friends, said in a soft, comforting voice.
“Exactly,” Linda added quickly, “Mr. Grant showing up today means he still has feelings for Ms. Wilson.”
“Ruby, if Mr. Grant didn’t like you, he wouldn’t wear the watch you gave him, or even match outfits with you. My brother even said this is the first time he’s seen Mr. Grant dress like this. If this isn’t love, then what is?” Cecilia, Carmelo’s younger sister, wrapped her arms around Ruby and kept wiping her tears.
Ruby was sobbing uncontrollably, her makeup running down her face.
Joycelyn couldn’t help but feel a little skeptical.
arit,
It was true that she had bought him the pink shirt on a whim, and he had eventually agreed to wear it, no one would’ve expected that.
As for the watch, Ruby had given it to him, and he did wear it.

Could it be that he still has feelings for her? Or maybe I am just part of their little drama? Joycelyn thought.

At the central seating area of the party, Ellison sat alone, his face cold as he sipped his drink in silence.
