Since Aiden wasn’t coming home that night, Freya put the snacks into the fridge. She had packed things that were easy to store, so they’d still be fine the next day.
As soon as Louis got back, he went straight to his room to work. Freya tidied up a little, then went to her room to write. She had barely typed five hundred words when her phone screen lit up with a new text.
Freya hadn’t received a text in ages, so it felt a bit novel. She opened it and read:
“Freya, I saw your Mr. Graham at a high–end club today. Didn’t you say he went bankrupt? What’s he doing at a place like that? I messaged you on WhatsApp too, but you didn’t respond. Did you two actually get divorced or not?”
The text was from someone named Sandra Fiona. Freya only had to dig briefly into the old Freya’s memories to place her- she had been a college classmate. Back then, their relationship was pretty good, and Sandra had always seemed like a girl with solid values.
After the old Freya married Louis, her relationship with Sandra had grown distant. Still, since Sandra was a decent person and there had never been any conflicts of interest between them, they occasionally kept in touch, and there was a bit of genuine care left
Freya quickly opened WhatsApp and, sure enough, found Sandra buried far down in the message list. She replied:
“If you’re not in a hurry to find someone new, then sure, there’s no rush to divorce. But don’t forget your age–you’re about to turn twenty–four. Being a rich guy’s wife was fine before, but now that things have changed, you’ve got to be able to support yourself. Whether it’s your career or your love life, you’ve gotta at least have something to hold on to.”
