Chapter 107 Growing Up

“One thing has nothing to do with the other. Asher standing up for you means he cares about you–but you really do need to grow up.” Waylon, for once, spoke to Kendrick with a rare touch of seriousness. “You can’t stay on the frontlines of showbiz forever. Eventually, you’ll need to handle things on the business side too. If you were upset about Louis being targeted, then think about this–if you had control of Starlet Corp, you might’ve been able to help him, at least a little.”
Baylon winced. That kind of talk probably hit Kendrick right in the heart. He was just about to jump in with a joke when Quinton quietly pressed his hand down and gave a slight shake of the head. Then, almost without moving his lips, he murmured. “Asher’s back. There’s going to be turbulence again. Kendrick needs to toughen up, or he’ll never be able to handle a place like Starlet Corp–that place is crawling with sharks.”
Baylon understood what Quinton meant. The logic wasn’t lost on him. But Kendrick… Kendrick had been spoiled by them- by this whole group of best friends. That guy wasn’t really clueless. He just played dumb around the people he trusted. He let his guard down on purpose.
But the problem was, Kendrick thought he was clever when really he was too blunt, too proud–and that made him easy to manipulate.
Quinton shot Baylon a look, and Baylon followed it–to Louis.
Yeah, that made sense. Normally, if Kendrick was being scolded, Asher would be the bad cop and Louis would step in to soothe things over. But now, even Louis was acting like he didn’t see a thing. That said it all. The two best friends were clearly dead set on toughening Kendrick up.
Since the two of them were in agreement, Baylon figured there was no point in interfering. He let the matter drop, his worry fading into a strange sense of glee. Back when I was the one getting lectured, Kendrick was always showing off. Now that it was Kendrick’s turn, I need to think of a few good ways to rub it in next time we meet.
Quinton glanced at his ridiculous friend and looked away with thinly veiled disdain. One glance at Baylon’s face and it was obvious he was already plotting how to gloat over Kendrick later. He’s clearly still holding a grudge from before. But honestly, Quinton thought, you’re no better. Your grades weren’t much to brag about either. The two of you are just the blind laughing at the blind.
Kendrick opened his mouth, wanting to defend himself, but couldn’t come up with a single thing to say. He sagged in defeat. “It’s not like this stuff can be handled overnight. I am trying to grow up, you know.”
