Following Micky’s instructions, Freya lay down inside the device. John was busy at a computer nearby, typing away. Freya tried to steady her racing heart, taking deep breaths to calm herself. Then everything went black–a dizzying sensation washed over her, and she lost consciousness.
Time blurred. It could have been seconds or hours. When Freya opened her eyes again, she found herself on a platform surrounded by floating panels full of options.
She selected “Female,” clicked “Scan,” and felt a strange vibration. A mirror appeared in front of her, reflecting her real–world face. Beside it were sliders for beauty adjustments, pain sensitivity, and other customization options.
Freya set beauty to 60%, picked a sleek red outfit, tweaked a few more settings, and entered her name before hitting “Confirm.”
The world shifted.
A breeze brushed against her skin—not quite real, but close enough. She stood at the foot of a mountain, a small roadside tavern nearby. The owner waved her over.
“Miss, you must be tired from your journey. Come in, rest your feet, and have some tea.”
Freya obliged. Inside, a few patrons sipped tea, their movements stiff–clearly NPCs. But one man stood out. Dressed in white, he carried himself differently.
A quest NPC, maybe?
When she sat across from him, he looked up, and Freya froze.
That face… It looked just like Louis.
“You made it. Any discomfort?”
Yep. Definitely Louis.
Freya sighed internally. “Just a little dizzy at first, but I’m fine now.”
This virtual Louis wore flowing white robes, a jade flute tucked at his waist. His hair was half- tied, half–loose, with two strands framing his face. Even in this rustic tavern, he exuded an air of effortless elegance.

Chapter 161 First Steps
Freya had always thought he’d fit right into a historical drama–a noble scholar with a swordsman’s grace. Now, seeing him like this, the effect was even more striking.
“So, what now?” Freya asked as the tavern owner set a pot of tea in front of her. She took a sip, mimicking Louis.
Not bad.
“After tea, we’ll get ourselves mounted.” Louis pulled up the in–game store and selected the most expensive white horse, complete with a premium saddle.
Freya checked her own account–1 million credit. She splurged on the same horse and saddle, then closed the menu. Louis had already summoned his steed, leaping onto it with practiced ease.
She copied him, swinging onto her horse’s back. With a tug of the reins, her mount surged forward, matching Louis’s pace. The wind rushed past as they sped down the mountain path.
