For now, all he could do was keep her close. He’d figure everything out in time.
Freya came out of the bathroom, her hair wrapped in a drying cap. Ever since she’d convinced herself she was clear–headed about everything, she’d completely dropped the goddess act in front of Louis. Since they were bound to be irrelevant to each other someday. whether she looked like a beauty queen or a slob didn’t matter one bit.
So when Louis heard her and turned his head, what he saw was a woman in long–sleeved cartoon pajamas, a bunny–eared hair wrap on her head, cheeks flushed from the steam, completely ignoring him as she walked over to the living room shelf to grab the hair dryer.
He walked over and handed it to her. Freya thanked him and plopped down on the couch to dry her hair.
A couple days later, Freya got a phone call. The person on the other end told her that the winners of the previous draw could report to Graham Group in two days to begin a live gameplay experience. All expenses–transportation, meals, and so on–would be covered by RealitySplit Group.
She went back to the official website to double–check all the details. The playtest would last a full week, and since it was a closed beta with data wipes, no progress would carry over to the official launch.
The goal was to encourage testers to explore as much as possible and help identify bugs and design issues. To that end, RealitySplit Group promised to provide players with everything they needed so their efficiency wouldn’t suffer due to resource shortages.
Freya didn’t care what other people thought–she was genuinely excited. This time she could play however she wanted. No more following Louis around. Wasn’t that just perfect?
On the day of the test, Freya finished her breakfast, got cleaned up, and started getting dressed to head out. She moved quicker than Louis, who said, “No rush. You’re coming with me.”
A free ride? Of course she was on board. No need to rush then.
When they arrived, Louis didn’t ask Freya to hang back or keep a low profile. He openly brought her inside. Along the way, when people greeted him, he responded with a polite nod. Some glanced curiously at Freya, and she returned their looks with a friendly smile. When they encountered high–level staff, Derek handled the introductions.

“Madam happened to win the prize draw and figured she’d give it a try. We’d appreciate it if you could keep an eye out for her.”
Anyone who held a senior position under Louis wasn’t an idiot. Even if they didn’t know the full story between him and Freya, they’d picked up at least some of it. A few had followed Louis from the beginning and knew much more.
That said, the higher–ups–especially the older ones–typically didn’t handle events like this. Too time–consuming. The ones in charge today were all younger staff.
They exchanged glances, all with different thoughts in mind, but one consensus stood out. This woman was almost unnervingly pretty.
The lead coordinator was a polished professional in his thirties, all smiles when greeting people, and every word out of his mouth made people feel at ease. Louis gave him a quick rundown, and he immediately assured him that Freya would be well taken care of. Once Louis and Derek headed upstairs, the coordinator turned his full attention to Freya.
“You really don’t need to be so formal with me. Just treat me like any other playtester,” Freya said. She’d originally wanted to ask them not to reveal her identity but then realized–they all made their living under Louis. Of course they wouldn’t listen to her, so she dropped it.
As the rest of the players arrived, they were led to their designated rooms. Each room had ten gaming pods and one supervisor.
Freya was assigned to Room One. Once the supervisor finished explaining everything they needed to know, the testers climbed into their pods, trying to contain their excitement as they waited to enter the game.
This time, Freya knew exactly what to do. She created her character, named herself “Master
game. Freya,” picked a decent–looking outfit, and entered the
As soon as she arrived in town, she began living like a real wandering heroine–leading her horse slowly through the streets. She tried the street snacks, bought anything fun that caught her eye, and when she heard someone singing opera on the east side of town, she stopped to listen. It didn’t matter if she understood it or not.
But my wife
“Sir, don’t be upset. You saved my life; of course I’m thinking of repaying y has a nasty temper. If he won’t take your son in, how can I take you in? I’ll keep you both fed and warm for now, and I’ll slowly convince my wife. If he changes his mind, we’ll find a solution then.”
