“My sister and my father have been estranged for a long time. My sister truly cared about you. Fine–if you won’t accept her, that’s your choice; but you don’t even give her the basic respect she deserves. You treat this woman like she’s some kind of treasure, but she’s not even worth it. She can’t compare to my sister in any way. You’re blind; you’ll regret this one day!”
Hearing that, Freya had had enough.
“Madam, I have to ask–what exactly makes you so sure I’m just some woman who only knows how to spend money? Is that really the picture you’ve been holding onto since nearly six months ago? Because if it is, here’s a little reminder–people change, and it’s easy to miss the forest for the trees when you’re stuck in the past. Just saying.”
Maria sneered. “There’s another old saying, ‘A leopard can’t change its spots!“”
“Sounds like you know quite a few. Then surely you also know that destroying someone’s family is illegal, right?” Freya couldn’t help but shake her head. Trying to argue with a novelist? That’s just asking for trouble.
“Look at your whole lot–elevating a side character to fake female lead status. What’s the real female lead supposed to do with that? Should she win you over or not? And even if she does, she gets no points for it, just ends up back at square one, fighting with the real lead again. That’s just cruel storytelling.”
Maria blinked in confusion. What real lead? What side lead? By the time she figured it out, she exploded.
“Why do you get to be the female lead, huh? My sister doesn’t even get to be the side character? You’re probably just cannon fodder!”
Freya looked at Louis. His eyes had been on her the whole time. When she glanced at him with a look of mock innocence, amusement flickered across his face–but when he turned to Ms. Maria, his voice turned cold again.
“She’s my leading lady. If you’ve got nothing else to say, then leave. A husband and wife are one. Disrespecting my wife is disrespecting me. For old times‘ sake, I won’t hold it against you today; but if there’s a next time, don’t expect me to show mercy.”
Louis had made himself perfectly clear. No matter how brazen Ms. Maria normally was, she knew better than to keep pushing. Though her heart simmered with frustration, she could only swallow it down. She stomped her foot in anger, spun around, and stormed off.

Freya had half–expected her to slam the door on her way out–but surprisingly, she didn’t. After she left, Freya could faintly hear Derek’s voice in the hallway; but the sound was quickly muffled as the door shut again. The room fell quiet once more.
Now that Maria was gone, Freya turned to Louis, curiosity all over her face, waiting for him to explain. Louis set down the file in his hand.
“Her name is Maria. She’s the illegitimate daughter of the current head of the Tate family. Years ago, her mother saved my grandfather’s life, so he asked me to help them if they ever fell on hard times. Two years ago, her mother died in a car accident, and Maria was brought back into the Tate family.”
Freya grinned slyly, ready to fill in the rest herself.
“So her family sweet–talked her into showing up, stirring the pot, and asking for favors. You helped out a few times out of respect for Grandpa, and once they got a taste of that, they weren’t about to let go. But when you lost power, they changed tactics. That’s when Ms. Maria was told to play the part–pretend she had feelings for you. Half strategy, half gamble. Just in case you went along with it, her family kept their distance so they wouldn’t get dragged down with her if things went sideways. But you didn’t take the bait. You made your comeback on your own. And since that plan fell through, they sent Maria back here to sniff around and see what they could find.”
Louis chuckled at her animated recap and nodded. “Pretty much just as you guessed.”
Freya laughed even harder.
“Ms. Maria is something else. She’s calling me an airhead when she’s the one acting like one. And her sister–well, she might not be dumb, but she sure played Ms. Maria like a fiddle. She says you’re blind, but maybe she’s the one who can’t see.”
“That girl’s been brainwashed by the Tate family. There’s a kind of stupidity baked right into her. But I already repaid her mother’s kindness when the Graham family went under. You don’t need to bother with her. If she ever tries to come to you directly, just let me know. You don’t need to be polite.”
For Louis to speak like that, it was clear that Maria had seriously gotten under his skin. Freya had no patience for people who insisted on being both dumb and combative. She wasn’t going to go out of her way to provoke Maria–but if that woman came looking for a fight, she wouldn’t be an easy target either.
“Got it. But you really just gave her those words to buy time, didn’t you? The moment the Tate family realizes you’re not interested in partnering with them, they’ll know exactly where you stand.”
