On the other end, the girls were thrilled to get any kind of reply from Freya. Smug and self- congratulatory, they all thought the same thing: See? My plan worked. Freya’s finally paying
attention,
Some of them even tried inviting her out shopping. Freya went back through their earlier messages, cross–checked the photos they’d sent, and picked the one whose taste she could at least tolerate. That was the person she agreed to meet.
When Louis came home that evening and heard about it, he actually approved.
“It’s good to get out and see people. If one person doesn’t work out, try someone else. What matters most is that you’re happy. And don’t hold back on spending. We’re not short on
money.”

“I’m just going out to walk around. No idea if I’ll see anything I like. But don’t worry–I won’t try to save you money,” Freya had been reminded not to pinch pennies so many already. It wasn’t like she was trying to be frugal–her spending habits were just different.
Still, she kept his words in mind. When she left the house, she made sure to dress up a little. She made a silent vow to herself: If I see something I really like today, I’m buying it. No guilt allowed.
Aiden had originally wanted to go with her, but the moment he found out they were only going shopping and doing nothing else, he dropped the idea without hesitation.
Freya ended up choosing Hannah, the second daughter of the White family. She was relatively tactful–didn’t come on too strong, and the images she’d sent had been closer to Freya’s tastes. Most importantly, when Hannah invited her out, she didn’t push for a time. She simply said to let her know whenever Freya was free.
That alone earned her a bit of goodwill from Freya.
They agreed to meet at the entrance of a shopping center. The moment Freya arrived, she immediately spotted Hannah. The girl was dressed to the nines, so polished it was like someone had photoshopped her into the real world–her style didn’t match anything or anyone around her.
Not that Freya realized it, but others had the exact same feeling when they looked at her.

The moment Hannah turned and saw Freya, she smiled–warm but not overly enthusiastic.
“Hope I didn’t keep you waiting.” Freya stepped out of the car, bag in hand, and waved to Derek–Louis had specifically arranged for him to drive her. Louis had wanted to come himself, but work didn’t allow it, so Derek had gone in his place.
Hannah caught a glimpse of the driver and silently raised her estimate of how important Freya was. She didn’t show it on her face, though, and just kept smiling politely.
“Not at all, I just got here myself. It’s been a while–you’re looking more;
than ever.”
That was when Freya finally remembered who Hannah was. Among that group of fake friends, Hannah was one of the slightly more normal ones–someone reasonably polite and self–aware, with a career of her own. Freya could only hope their outing wouldn’t be too awkward.
“Oh, hardly. I’ve been slacking on skincare lately–I probably look terrible. You’re just being sweet. But you, on the other hand, are glowing.” Freya could do the polite back–and–forth
“They’ve all been saying you’ve changed, and I didn’t believe them–until now. Your compliments are like honey, so sweet.” Hannah laughed as she tugged at the strap of her crossbody bag, then asked, “What do you think of this outfit? My dad picked it up for me in Freah. He doesn’t know anything about fashion, though. I think the bag’s a weird color to match.”
“I think it looks great. Your whole outfit works really well together. You’ve definitely got a good eye.”
