Waylon rolled his eyes toward the ceiling. “You do know I’ve got zero interest in getting married right now, right?”
“I thought maybe Andres was behind this at first,” Mathilda said, sitting up straighter and shrugging, “but nope. Jasmine really is just staying here temporarily. Don’t get any funny ideas.”
“Good. That’s a relief.” If Mathilda said so, it was probably true.
Mathilda shot him a look and rolled her eyes. Waylon quickly gave her a sheepish grin.
“Just… help keep an eye on things. I’m a grown man. Wouldn’t be appropriate if people thought I was getting too close to a young girl.”
Mathilda sighed. “Jasmine’s beautiful, got great manners, and she’s ambitious too. You’ve got the perfect chance right here under your nose. I don’t get what you young folks are even into these days.”
“Maybe my soulmate’s still out there somewhere, waiting to cross my path,” Waylon muttered, leaning deeper into the couch with an exaggerated sigh.
In the days that followed, Waylon continued his chaotic, unpredictable schedule. Occasionally, he’d come home early–but he barely saw Jasmine outside of mealtimes. She kept to herself, and he couldn’t help but feel a little curious.
There were no interactions, no questions for help, no drama. She just… existed quietly. Waylon resigned himself to the awkward/peace between them.
Until one morning—
He wandered into the kitchen, expecting Mathilda–and found Jasmine inst
“Huh? Why are you–Where’s Mathilda?”
“She had to leave early for something at home. Asked me to let you know she’ll be out for the next few days,” Jasmine said without looking up, flipping shredded potatoes in a hot pan. saw the potatoes sitting out, so I’m making hash browns.”

Waylon was still groggy. “She’s out… then why you cooking?”
This time Jasmine turned to look at him. Her clear, calm eyes locked onto his with just a

And before he could say anything, she added with a slightly hesitant tone, “Or…. do you want to cook?”
Waylon went quiet for a second, realizing how dumb his earlier question had been. His voice came out dry, “I… can’t cook.”
“Oh.” Her reply was flat and emotionless. She turned back to the stove like she hadn’t even paused.
Waylon opened his mouth again, tried to find something to say–but nothing came. He didn’t know how to talk to girls like her. Didn’t even know what she was into.
Wait–ask her about grad school! Yes!
Waylon lit up with inspiration, just about to speak-
“You can go sit down,” Jasmine said, catching him out of the corner of her eye. “If you’re hungry, there are snacks in the fridge. Mathilda made some yesterday.”
Well, so much for that conversation.
Waylon awkwardly left the kitchen and strolled back to the living room to watch the morning
news.
A few minutes later, Jasmine called out to him, “Breakfast’s ready.”
The meal was more of a feast than he expected.
He scooped up a spoonful of cereal–soft, sweet, and perfectly textured. Then he tried the hash browns–crispy, a little tangy, well seasoned. Easily an eight out of ten. The bacon? Hard to tell. The cookies? Fantastic.
“You’re a good cook,” Waylon said, surprised it wasn’t just “passable.”
“It’s alright,” Jasmine replied, not one to boast.
Feeling a little guilty about eating her food in silence, Waylon remembered his earlier topic and threw it back on the table.
“You’re applying to Comoyo University, right? What major?”
