Chapter 333 Friends, Flags, and the NotSoCool Parade.

Aiden! You’re here so early!

The shout rang out across the field, loud and excited. Freya turned just in time to see a high- energy kid with a head full of curls sprinting toward them like a rocket.

Leo!Aiden’s whole expression lit upway different from how he’d reacted to Chloe earlier. His voice was bright and excited. What took you so long?

Chloe’s face instantly soured. As Aiden stood to go greet Leo Thompson, she grabbed the back of his shirt, nearly pulling him off balance.

Leo being here isn’t a big deal, she muttered. Yeah, he’s good at sports, but it’s not like he’s the only one who’s good at stuff.

The jealousy in her voice wasn’t subtle, and Freya couldn’t help glancing over as Aiden gave up, sighed, and sat back down. Still, he waved Leo over and pointed to the open seat beside him. Come sit here!

Behind Léo, his parents jogged to catch up. His momsurprisinglywas a foreigner, which explained the wild curls and dolllike features.

Leo, slow down! She called after him, slightly out of breath. His dad followed behind with a resigned sigh.

Leo waved dismissively. You guys don’t have to runI’m going ahead!

Freya figured it was rare to see Aiden this excited about a friend, so despite Chloe’s obvious irritation, she quietly moved to Louis’s other side to free up the seat next to Aiden.

Leo jogged up, nodded politely at her, and said, Thanks, ma’am,” and immediately dropped into the seat beside his friend.

The two boys jumped right into their own nonstop chatter. Chloe, of course, couldn’t help but butt inand pretty soon, she and Leo were bickering over which cartoon character was the best.

Freya glanced over at Chloe’s parents. They didn’t seem worried, so she stayed quiet. Maybe this is just how kids work things out, she thought..

Leo’s parents arrived shortly after, greeted the adults politely, and took seats nearby. They didn’t seem to know anyone well, though they clearly recognized Louis. Still, they kept their

distance, which Freya appreciated.

By now, the field was filling up with more students and families, the whole place buzzing with

energy.

A few people came over, clearly trying to strike up a conversation with Louis, but he kept things cool and distant. Freya was starting to get why he usually avoided these events- dealing with person after person trying to make a connection could be exhausting.

Most of the people trying to strike up conversation weren’t particularly sharp, either. The ones who actually had some sense knew better than to hover right before an event started.

Even so, she couldn’t help feeling a little conflicted. These people were just out here trying to make a living, hustling for a deal. Freya wasn’t sure how to feel about itannoyed or empathetic.

Thankfully, the sports day finally began.

The familiar swell of orchestral music came over the loudspeakers, and the atmosphere lifted instantly. Freya couldn’t help but laugh.

Louis leaned over. What’s so funny?

She grinned and whispered in his ear, It’s always the same music at every school event. Same rhythm, same tone.

Louis thought about it, then chuckled too. He gave her hand a light squeeze. Same in your world, huh?

Yup. Elementary school, middle school, high school, collegeit never changed. Even the music they use during the flag ceremony is the same,Freya said with a smile. Pretty sure the author who wrote this story was deeply traumatized by it tooit shows up in all their books.

Sure enough, just like every school event ever, each class had a kid out front carrying a flag. followed by a line of classmates doing their best to march in sync. They weren’t exactly marching like pros, but it was adorable to watch. With the announcer narrating over the loudspeaker, the whole thing finally felt like a real school sports day.
