Since Ethan’s second wife didn’t come from a powerful family, she had little say in anything. And because of that, Ethan had lived a pretty carefree life for many years.

But that carefree life vanished the moment he realized his son didn’t measure up to others.

People, especially men, always had something to compete over. When they were young, it was who slept with more women, who had the biggest business.

Once they got older, it became who had the more capable kids and the cuter grandkids.

Ethan had always thought he came out ahead in every category–until it came to his son. No matter how he looked at it, Dean just didn’t stack up against his peers.

Asher was a total anomaly, and Louis–fine, he was a genius. But now, even Baylon and Kendrick seemed to be outshining his boy, and that was just unacceptable.

What he never expected was that his son wouldn’t just fall short–he’d go and do something so stupid, it left Ethan speechless.

“I swear, when you were born, the nurse didn’t drop you on the floor. I had eyes when I held you, I didn’t bash your head into a door. So how the heck did you turn out this dumb? If I hadn’t gone and taken another paternity test the other day, I wouldn’t even believe you were mine! Go on, tell me how the hell did you manage to screw up this bad?”

“Dad, don’t be so hard on him. It was Sebastian who went back on his word,” Savannah chimed in, unable to watch Dean get reamed without saying something.

“You shut it! He’s an idiot, and you’re not much better!” Ethan snapped. “I told you to keep an eye on your brother–how’d you do that? He got himself into this mess, and instead of clearing your name, you followed him right into it! If that old fossil from the Wells family hadn’t stepped in, I’d be handing you my head on a platter! You’ve got time to worry about him, but not enough to focus on locking down the Wells family? You’re about to lose the bird in hand!”

Savannah flinched at his roar, her voice turning soft and wounded. “Dad, I didn’t think Sebastian would go back on his word like that…”

“I told you to marry him, but you didn’t listen. Thought you were God’s gift to men or something? Take a good hard look in the mirror. Even if I am your father, I can’t lie and say you’re some breathtaking beauty! You should’ve been grateful that Sebastian treated you like royalty, Marriage, control of the finances–that’s what matters. Without a ring, all your talking is pointless!”

Do whatever it takes to get him to marry you. Otherwise, people are just gonna think he used you and tossed you aside. Who’s gonna want you then?”

Savannah’s face turned ghost–white. She’d always known her father was blunt and crass–but hearing him talk about his own daughter like this, without even blinking, left her utterly humiliated.

Normally, anytime Ethan yelled at Savannah, Dean would jump in and take the heat to protect her. But today, he was barely keeping his own head above water–he didn’t have the time or energy to step in.

Savannah was so cornered she couldn’t even argue back, and Ethan couldn’t be bothered to waste more words on her. He switched targets and tore back into Dean.

The truth was, Ethan didn’t see anything wrong with his son scheming to take over his wife’s inheritance. He just thought Dean was too incompetent and clumsy about it.

And just as Andres predicted, Savannah soon reached out to Sebastian, trying indirectly to warm things back up.

When Sebastian got the message, he froze. He couldn’t quite explain what he was feeling. But Andres, seeing the look on his face, knew exactly what had happened. He didn’t say anything. though. He wanted to see how Sebastian would handle it on his own.

Meanwhile, Freya had followed Louis to yet another one of his offices. This one, she’d never visited before. It was completely different from the others, and the atmosphere inside felt strict and buttoned–up. Unlike the last few places, no one here poked their heads out to gawk at her when she walked in.

Everyone was busy with their own tasks, clustered in groups, deeply focused. Even when Louis walked through, barely anyone looked up. It wasn’t until they reached his office that things felt more private.
