“Oh, got it.” Freya didn’t feel like arguing. She knew Louis meant well, so she’d just accept the gesture.

She took the cup from him, and Louis got up and went back to the bedroom. After a sip of water, she set it down again, but didn’t resume the movie. No writing, no money–that was the reality.

Now that she thought about it, she still had no idea what Louis was actually busy with all the time. She hadn’t dared ask either. What if he was still cleaning up the mess from going bankrupt? That would just be twisting the knife.

Over the next few days, Louis kept his usual routine–out early, back late. Their daily interactions boiled down to sharing breakfast and dinner. The rest of the time, they went about their own business.

One afternoon, Louis came home early.

Freya was writing when the door opened. Without looking up, she said out of habit, “You’re back.”

Then came a voice she hadn’t expected, loud and clear: “Why is she here? You still haven’t gotten divorced?” It was Junmistakably a child’s voice–full of surprise and obvious disdain, with no effort to hide it.

Freya’s brain immediately conjured up the image of a super cute little boy: Louis’s cousin’s kid.

Louis’s older cousin and his wife had died in an accident. Since they had been Louis’s closest relatives, he had taken in their son, Aiden. The boy was eight this year–and he’d always looked down on the original Freya.

Worse yet, one time during a school break, Aiden had been starving at home. The chef happened to be out sick, and Freya, busy meeting some fake friends, didn’t pay attention and ordered food that was way too spicy for a kid. Aiden got sick for days.

Freya actually liked kids. But Aiden probably didn’t like her back. That much was obvious from what he’d just said.

Louis corrected him calmly, “We’re not divorced. So of course shè’s here. In fact, from now on, you’ll be living with her too. She’s in charge of your food.”

“What?! You’re joking, right?Aiden was stunned. In the past, whenever he complained about Freya, Louis never stopped him. As long as he wasn’t being outrageous, Louis didn’t interfere at all. Why was it different this time?

“Wait… does that mean what they said was true? You really went bankrupt? Is that why you have to put up with this woman?
