Louis didn’t object, so Freya tentatively extended an olive branch. “Are you on break now? What do you want to eat? I’ll make it for you.”

“You know how to cook? Then why didn’t you cook before?” Aiden asked with wide, innocent eyes–but his question was sharp as ever.

Louis answered for her, “We had a chef back then.”

“So I can ask for anything I want?”

Before he could say more, Freya cut in. “I can only make home–cooked meals. If it’s something from a fancy restaurant, I’m out.”

Aiden pouted. “You said it like you’re some amazing chef or something.”

“Mashed potatoes,” Louis said flatly, giving no room for negotiation.

Freya nodded. No problem–mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs would do.

Still, she put more effort into cooking than usual. She made the mashed potatoes and eggs as playful and child–friendly as possible.

Freya genuinely liked kids. Back in the day, she used to play with her best friend’s baby all the time. If she saw a child crying in public, her heart would ache and she’d want to go comfort them. The moment she saw Aiden earlier, she’d already found him adorable. The kid was ridiculously cute. If their relationship hadn’t been so rocky to start, she probably would’ve rushed over to hug him by now.

Louis had taken Aiden to the room, doing who–knows–what. Once the food was ready, Freya went to call them. Aiden came out already changed into pajamas with little bears on them, having washed his hands and obediently settled into the seat Freya had set up just for him. When he saw the dishes on the table, he looked genuinely surprised.

You made all this?” he asked, pointing at the food.

The dishes were full of cute cartoon faces, and even the mashed potatoes had a smiley face drawn with who–knowswhat. It was all just for him–Freya and Louis’s plates looked completely normal. His was one of a kind.

Yup. First day of break, you get VIP treatment. I’ll get you your own set of kiddie utensils next time. The big ones aren’t easy to use.” Freya poured him some juice.

Aiden went quiet for a moment, then lifted his chin stubbornly. “You don’t have to make special food for me. I’m not a baby anymore. I eat normal food at school just like everyone else. I’m in third grade, you know.”

Freya answered matter–offactly, “You could be in college, and you’d still be a kid to us. Besides, what I cook is up to me. You only get to choose whether to eat it or not. If you don’t eat, next time I’ll make something you hate the most. And since we’re broke now, don’t expect any allowance to go buy food. You’ll just go hungry.”

You… you woman!” Aiden puffed up with anger, glaring at Freya.
