Aiden gave Freya a deeply unimpressed side–eye. “Don’t compare me with the kids you used to see. I’m a member of a high- IQ club.”
Freya withdrew the orange slice she was about to hand him and popped it into her own mouth instead. Watching Aiden chew, she asked, “Did I ever tell you I graduated from a top university too?”
“You? A top university?” Aiden clearly didn’t believe it.
“Yes, a top university. A prestigious one. There was a reason I married your uncle and ended up looking like someone who only knows how to shop. But I’ve figured things out now and gone back to being myself. Got it?” She held out the orange to him again, but just as he reached for it, she pulled it back. He grabbed at the air and missed.
“Are you giving it to me or not?” Aiden huffed like an annoyed little Labrador. Freya smiled and finally handed it over. “Here. Eat. How about wontons for lunch?”
“I’m kinda hungry anyway. Make a lot.” Aiden stuffed the orange into his mouth and mumbled through it.
“Alright, I’ll make sure this kid gets fed good and full.” Freya saved her document and stood up to head to the kitchen. As Aiden watched her walk away, something soft and unfamiliar flickered in his eyes–something even he didn’t realize was called attachment.
Ever since his parents passed, he hadn’t lived in a place that actually felt like a home. Back at Louis’s villa, he never lacked food or clothes, and Louis treated him well, but it didn’t feel like living. His heart had never truly settled.
But now, with Freya checking in on him every day, treating him so naturally, chatting with him like family–it was the first time in a long time he felt like he belonged. He was starting to understand why his uncle no longer treated this woman with the same indifference.
Louis could also tell Aiden was becoming more comfortable around Freya. When he asked how things were going at home, Aiden usually said he was pretty happy.
One night over dinner, Freya suddenly suggested, “I’ve got some free time the next couple of days, and Aiden’s been stuck at home without going out. How about I take him to the amusement park tomorrow?”
Louis paused mid–motion, clearly noticing how Aiden instantly perked up at her words. After thinking for a moment, he realized Aiden had been home for five days without once stepping outside. “Okay. I’ll adjust my schedule tomorrow.”
Freya opened her mouth, then closed it again. She had nothing to say. Honestly, she had planned to take Aiden out by herself. But now that Louis said he’d go, what could she say?
Aiden, on the other hand, lit up immediately. His eyes sparkled as he gave Freya a beaming smile. “Thanks, Freya!”
Then he turned to Louis. “Thanks, Uncle. But if you’re busy, Freya and I can go on our own.”
