Louis happened to overhear the last bit of their conversation just as he walked over with a towel in hand, ready to clean up. His gaze turned thoughtful for a moment. Then, as he entered the bathroom, he deliberately made his footsteps louder. The two people inside fell instantly silent like nothing had ever been said.
Cleaning the apartment wasn’t nearly as exhausting as Freya had expected. She still decided to cook at home. This neighborhood had a large supermarket, much bigger than the one near their old place, so shopping would definitely be easier in the future. For now, she just needed to go grab some vegetables and fruit for the day.
This time, Aiden behaved himself and didn’t beg to tag along. Unexpectedly, Louis said he was going too. Freya tried to stop him.
“There’s really no need. I can carry it all back myself. It’s just the first run, I won’t be buying that much–just enough for today. You guys should rest. We’ve all been working all morning.”
“How are you going to sneak snacks back if I don’t come?” Louis tossed out casually as he grabbed a coat from the rack and began putting on his shoes like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Was he ever going to let that go?
But the truth was, she did want to get some snacks. With nothing more to say, she let him tag along.
Louis had been kind to her, and Aiden was an adorable kid. Even if they weren’t technically her family, Freya already saw them as friends. But no matter how close they became, she’d always feel like an outsider here. Louis was the ex–husband of the original Freya. Aiden was his nephew. Everything she had now wasn’t truly hers.
