The driver kept his eyes on me until I entered the college.
I came here seeking an escape, but even during classes, my mind was consumed with thoughts of Nikolai.
Everyone knew what had happened to my family, and they sympathized with me. But I didn’t want their sympathy. I was just relieved they didn’t know about my forced marriage to Nikolai, or they’d start fearing me for no reason. If there was one thing Nikolai had done right, it was keeping the wedding private—only a few of his close men, the Mafia council, and the priest had been present.
My friends tried to cheer me up, but I couldn't focus on anything. After classes, I went to the library and plugged in my phone to charge. I had been debating whether to call Dimitri, but I wasn’t sure if it was the right decision.
He had agreed to marry me because he was going to get a share of my father’s property. But now, with everything gone, I had no idea how he would react.
Still, I had to try. Dimitri was powerful, and more importantly, he was Nikolai’s rival.
Making up my mind, I walked out of the library. I walked out only to find students playing on the field. I needed peace for this conversation, and this was definitely not the place.
Shaking my head, I headed to the backside of the college, where it was usually silent due to ongoing construction work.
The phone my father had given me before sending me away was still with me. I had kept it hidden from Nikolai, knowing he would either snatch it or put a tracker on it. It had died last night, so I charged it earlier in the college.
After a few rings, Dimitri picked up.
"Hello, Alessia," his thick, concerned voice came through. "How are you? Where have you been? I tried to contact you multiple times. I even went to the countryside, but you weren’t there. You know Nikolai—"
"—burned down my empire," I finished for him.
Silence.
"I know this, Dimitri." A silent sob rippled through my chest and was about to pass my lips, but I suppressed it. I will let this pain out of my heart only when I have taken my revenge. "But what you don't know is Nikolai has married me... forcefully."
Another long, deafening silence.
I gave him time to process my words. He had been my fiancé. This had to be a shock.
I could hear him swallow and feel his hesitation before he spoke. "You mean... what? Alessia, tell me this is a lie"
“I wish it were.” My grip on the phone tightened. “But Dimitri, I had no choice. Nikolai did everything to claim me, and now... Now I am married to him"
I was sure he could hear the strangled sob in my voice.
"Are... are you okay? Did he try to—"
"No, he didn’t," I cut in sharply. "And now, I don’t care what he does to me. He had already killed my family and stole my happiness. I have nothing left to lose."
"And what about me?" His voice dropped to a low, pained whisper. "Alessia, you were mine. Your father promised you to me. How could you let this happen?"
"I was helpless," I stated firmly. "But I haven’t accepted him as my husband. That’s why I called you. Dimitri, I want revenge for every drop of blood my family spilled because of him. I want to ruin his empire the way he ruined mine."
I took a deep, steadying breath.
"Where are you, Alessia? I am coming to take you"
"No, Dimitri," I state,d "it is not easy to escape Capo. We will have to move forward with proper planning if we want to win."
"I am with you, Alessia. I also want to take revenge for what he did to them and ... you."
I gulped down the emotions.
"Nikolai is working on a shipment right now. I’ll find out the details and let you know. We have to start somewhere, even if it’s just a small blow to him."
"I will do everything in my power to dismantle his business and destroy him," Dimitri vowed, his voice seething with rage. "He made a mistake burning down your empire and keeping you hostage."
"I’ll keep this phone hidden and only contact you when I’m in college. Don’t call me."
"Okay. Take care of yourself, Alessia. I’ll come for you. I promise."
With that, I ended the call.
Tucking the phone safely inside my bag, I sat on the stairs, trying to breathe.
I didn’t want to go back to that house. It wasn’t my home.
Closing my eyes, I tried to find some calm, but only a few minutes had passed before I heard the sound of footsteps crunching against the gravel.
My eyes slowly opened. At first, my vision was blurry, and I had to blink multiple times to clear it. My chest tightened when I saw three boys standing in front of me.
