Mallie had a procedure scheduled for today – she was going to end the pregnancy. Even though it broke her heart, she didn’t dare go against Abraham’s wishes. Since that day, Abraham hadn’t come around, and every time she called, either he didn’t pick up or another woman answered. That’s when it hit her: Abraham had a new flame, and they seemed to be head over heels.
Mallie knew that if she kept defying him, she’d be shown the door sooner. She had been Abraham's kept woman for years, her life revolving around him. If he let her go, she’d lose her sense of purpose and direction. The thought of returning to a life of loneliness and vulnerability was terrifying.
Sitting on the hospital bed in her gown, she clutched the ultrasound photo, tears falling and staining the image. This picture would be her only keepsake, a reminder of what could have been. Plus, she knew she wouldn’t be able to have kids again. How could she not feel shattered?
Her phone rang suddenly, and she thought it might be Abraham. Hastily wiping her tears, she answered, but it wasn’t him or Levi. It was a woman named Holt, saying her boss wanted to meet with Mallie.
Mallie was caught off guard. Ever since she became Abraham's kept woman, her world had shrunk. The people she dealt with were either gathering intel for Abraham or were other mistresses she met for tea and shopping. They were more like informants than friends. Even her connection with her cousin Breanne only existed when needed.
She couldn’t figure out who this boss was, so she asked carefully. Holt chuckled, “My boss is Ms. Selena. You might have bumped into her once.”
Selena... Just hearing her name had become Mallie’s worst nightmare recently. Every time Abraham stayed over, that name tormented her. Instinctively, Mallie was wary and defensive about Selena.
Her demeanor turned icy, “What does she want?”
Holt didn’t seem fazed by Mallie’s chilliness. She kept her tone light and continued, “Ms. Selena is at the café across the street. If you want to keep your child, maybe you should drop by.”
The nurse was puzzled, “What? You’re all set, and now you’re backing out?”
Mallie didn’t bother with details. Still in her hospital gown, she threw on a coat, grabbed her bag, and dashed out.
Ten minutes later, she walked into the café and sat across from Selena.
