Charlotte had no idea that Brian had once again begun digging into her life. But even if she knew, it would not have bothered her much. After all, whatever he managed to uncover was only the tip of the iceberg.
Very few people knew her true identity at the research institute. Even fewer were aware that Mandy and Charlotte were the same person.
That evening after work, Charlotte went straight to the kindergarten to pick up Amber. Amber's face lit up the moment she saw Charlotte waiting outside. She happily climbed into the car.
Charlotte did not waste any time. As soon as Amber was settled in, she asked, "Amber, tell me the truth. How exactly did you meet Kayden and the others?"
She had been thinking about this all afternoon.
Amber had already guessed that her mother would ask about this. She answered obediently, "We met in the neighborhood. I was looking for Snow Puff, and it ran into their house. That's how I met them."
While Amber spoke, she kept a close eye on Charlotte's expression. The slight crease between Charlotte's brows told Amber that her explanation was not quite enough.
Quickly, Amber added, "Don't worry, Mommy. I didn't tell anyone where we live. But… Kayden already seems to know."
Amber pouted and continued, "This morning, I made him promise not to tell anyone that we live next door and not to mention anything about you, especially to his daddy. He agreed."
Hearing how cautious Amber was, Charlotte felt a little more at ease. As long as Kayden kept his mouth shut, the secret that she was Mandy would stay safe.
Still, Charlotte could not help feeling a little uneasy. She hesitated for a moment, then asked softly, "Amber, do you know who… that man is?"
Before she could finish, Amber nodded quickly and answered with confidence, "I know. He's your patient. And… he used to be really mean to you, didn't he?"
The word "ex-husband" hovered at the tip of Amber's tongue, but she stopped herself from saying it.
Even so, her reply was enough to make Charlotte's heart tighten. Amber knew more than she let on. Did she already suspect that Brian might be her father?
Just as the thought crossed her mind, Amber puffed up her cheeks and said seriously, "Don't worry, Mommy. Even though that man helped me today, he bullied you before. I won't like him. I only love you. I love you the most."
After the sweet declaration, Amber leaned over and planted a soft kiss on Charlotte's cheek.
