Mr. Norman, She's Out of Your League Now novel Chapter 87

Brian rushed downstairs, planning to catch up with Charlotte and walk her out. But even though he moved fast, she was already gone by the time he reached the restaurant entrance.

Maryanne followed behind him and called out, "Brian, let's head out together."

Realizing it was just Maryanne, he didn't refuse. He told Henry to bring the car around.

Once they got in, Maryanne noticed he hadn't said a word, so she asked, "You've met Char before today, haven't you?"

Brian didn't deny it.

Maryanne wasn't surprised. She had already picked up on it from what happened earlier in the restaurant. She knew exactly how Brian was. Since when did he ever stick up for someone like that?

With a knowing smile, she asked, "So, what are your thoughts?"

Brian pressed his lips together and replied blandly, "I don't have any thoughts."

"Oh, please. You can't fool me." Maryanne saw right through him and chuckled. "If you didn't care, then why'd you speak up for her back there? That's not like you."

Brian's eyes remained steady, but his tone was stubborn. "You're reading too much into it. I just can't stand how the Perrys act."

Maryanne gave a knowing smile and said, "If you look at it from their perspective, assuming what happened back then was true, then yes, what she did today could seem a little inappropriate. They brought her up, so they get to stand on the moral high ground. Anything she does out of line would look like serious disrespect to them, especially given the history.

"But I have to say that she has really changed. She used to be so obedient and gentle. Now, she's sharp, confident. She doesn't take crap from anyone..."

She trailed off, sounding almost amused.

Brian picked up on the shift in her tone immediately. He asked in confusion, "Why do you sound... kinda happy about that?"

Maryanne looked out the window and said, "Change for the better always makes me happy. She was too well-behaved before. Not that it was bad, but she was just too nice. I was worried she'd get walked all over.

"It turns out that she did—by you, you rascal. But now, with the way she acts, I'm guessing she's not exactly rolling out the welcome mat for you these days, huh?"

Brian didn't know what to say.

Not welcome? She didn't even bother hiding her disdain anymore.

Maryanne saw his expression and looked almost gleeful. "That's life. You only realize what you've lost after it's gone... So, tell me, Brian, how bitter are you feeling right now?"

Brian was at a loss for words. Alright, he got it. Maryanne was clearly a fan of Charlotte. It was not that surprising, though. Back when Charlotte lived with the Normans, she and Maryanne were close. She had always liked Charlotte.

As they talked, the car pulled into the Norman residence.

As Maryanne got out, she turned to Brian and said, "Don't take what your mom said tonight to heart. She's easily swayed and always ends up being someone's tool. As for that engagement with the Perry family, don't force yourself if you don't want it.

"You already married once for your grandfather's sake, and look how that turned out. There's no need to repeat that mess. From now on, it's up to you to marry whoever you want.

"And honestly? That so-called fake daughter isn't necessarily a bad choice. I think she's great. As for Lydia? She doesn't even come close."

Maryanne was blunt, and her opinion of Charlotte was sky-high.
