Chapter 493 Sweet Nothings
David speculated aloud, “Are you feeling homesick?”
Zephyr shook his head, his gaze flickering toward Sophia sitting beside him. “I don't really have a home to miss. My parents are both gone. But since Sophia's in Jacaster, I thought maybe, just maybe, I'd run into her again someday.”
Sophia's lips tightened as she fought the urge to roll her eyes. Sweet nothings!
Yet, her parents seemed charmed by what they perceived as Zephyr's sincerity.
David chuckled, a spark of mischief in his tone. An exceptional son-in-law like him in the Tortell family business could really make the company flourish. And once Felix joins, Zephyr, as his brother-in-law, could lend him a hand. It all fits perfectly.
Though Tortell Fashion had a solid reputation, it couldn't hold a candle to Richfield Investments. The question remained: would Zephyr even entertain the idea? David decided he would have to tread carefully. I'll ease into it and wait for just the right moment.
David and Evelyn had already accepted Zephyr as their future son-in-law in their hearts. His natural charm made the lunch enjoyable for everyone, filling the room with laughter and light conversation. Yet, beneath her cheerful facade, Sophia felt a strange sense of melancholy she couldn't quite place.
Her parents' delight with Zephyr should have made her happy; it was a good thing, but watching him effortlessly win them over, his jokes drawing hearty laughter, left her feeling a bit dispirited.
After lunch, Evelyn suggested that Sophia escort Zephyr upstairs to rest, deliberately giving them some alone time.
Zephyr followed Sophia upstairs. Sophia casually pushed open the door to a guest room, “You should go in and rest for a bit.”
Zephyr gently grabbed her wrist. “Come with me, there's something I need to tell you.”
“What is it?” Sophia followed him into the guest room.
Zephyr closed the door and said, “I won't bring up the matter of marriage today. We'll talk about it next time.”
Sophia raised an eyebrow. “But even then, they might not agree to the wedding next month. Have you figured out how to persuade them?”
“It's going to be a piece of cake.”
“You seem confident.”
With a smile, Zephyr took two steps forward, slightly leaned over, and whispered something into Sophia's ear.
Sophia's ears turned red in embarrassment, and her annoyance flared into anger. Grinding her teeth in frustration, she retorted, “Pregnant? No way. Don't expect me to go along with your plan!”
“Come on, Sophia...”
“No means no! And don't you dare say that again. If you do, there will be consequences,” Sophia retorted with a smirk.
“All right, all right. Fine. I'll think of something else. I think I should be able to handle your dad. I just need to convince your mom first.”
“I can persuade my mom,” Sophia said. “All you need to do is find a valid reason to get my dad's permission.”
“All right.”
After Zephyr left the Tortell residence, David advised Sophia, “I think Zephyr is a decent young man, deeply devoted to you. You should hold on to him tightly and avoid being as willful as you are at home.”
“I know what to do, Dad.”
David was speechless at her blunt remark before saying, “No matter what, you'll always be Daddy's baby girl.”
Seeing Sophia's impatient expression, David waved his hand. “Go keep your mom company. I'm off to the office.”
As soon as David left, Evelyn called Sophia over to her side. “Come here, I have something to ask you.”
“What is it?”
“What exactly happened between you and Zephyr back in high school?” Evelyn asked, her gaze piercing Sophia as if she had already figured it out.
Sophia's eyes twinkled as she blinked and played dumb. “What do you mean? What's this about me and him in high school?”
Evelyn snorted. “Please. Given how much you dreaded doing homework, I know you well enough to know that you would never offer to tutor a classmate.”
Sophia tugged at her mother's arm, attempting to bluff her way through. “I suddenly realized the importance of studying back then. I despised my former self and decided to turn over a new leaf, to rectify my past mistakes. Weren't you happy to see that?”
“Do you really think I'd believe that?” Evelyn looked at her daughter, not convinced by a single word she said.
After Sophia was born, Evelyn became pregnant again. However, at three months, it was discovered that the baby's heartbeat was absent, resulting in a miscarriage. After that, she never conceived again, and she showered her only daughter with love.
