Isred at my reflection in the car window, the glass slightly distorting my features but still giving me a clear enough view of my hair

Reaching up, I fix it even though there was nothing wrong with it. Still,, I smoothen a loose strand back into place, then tuck another behind my ear.

Better

Glancing through the window at the house in front of me, my stomach flutters as I drew in a slow breath, then another before grabbing my bag, pushing open the car door and stepping outside.

The cool evening air brushes against my skin as I made my way up the path toward the front door, stopping for half a second, took one last breath,, then pressed the doorbell.

I barely had to wait long before the door opens and Amelia stood on the other side, her face immediately brightens when she saw me.

“Delilah.. she said my name with such warmth that I couldn’t help smiling, and before I could properly respond, she steps forward, wrapping her arms around me, “It’s so good to see you again.”

Her hand moved gently up and down my back before giving it a light pat and I hug her back, smiling against her shoulder. “It’s nice seeing you too.”

She pulled away, still smiling, “Come in,” I nod, stepping inside, and she closed the door behind me, “Caelum’s in the kitchen,” she explained, “he’s helping with dinner.”

I nod, still smiling as she led me toward the living room, where Matthew, Caelum’s father seated, and the moment he noticed me, his expression warms.

“Delilah.”

“Mr. Hart.”

“Please Matthew, dear,” he corrects as he her to his feet, a smile spread across his face, “It’s good to see you again.”

“You too.”

He gestured for me to sit. “Ryder and Caelum told us what happened. About you being there and helping save him.” Fimmediately shook my head, “I barely did anything.”

Matthew gave me a look. “I beg to differ.”

Amelia nods beside him. “He’s right.”

Smiling awkwardly, I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear, “Well..I’m just glad I could help.”

“And we are glad you were there for him,” Amelia said warmly.

Nodding again, I muttered, “Thank you.”

Before either of them could say anything else, a soft giggle drifts in from the kitchen. I look toward the sound, realizing how feminine it sounded.

My brows lifts slightly before I quickly school my expressio, turning back toward Amelia, pretending I hadn’t heard anything, but she seemed to notice anyway.

“Oh, I completely forgot to mention,” she smiles, “we have one more guest joining us tonight.”

eyes flicked toward the kitchen again before I caught myself. “Oh.”

Amelia gestured toward the living room. “Make yourself comfortable, sweetheart,” she smiles before heading toward the kitchen, while I stay where I was for a moment, my gaze lingering in the direction of the voices.

I wondered if they had a relative over

Matthew’s voice pulls my attention back to him. “So, how was your day?”

Turning toward him. “Pretty good.”

“And school?”

“Fine. Busy, but fine.”

He nods, settling back into his seat, “Keeping up with everything?”

“Trying to,” I smiled faintly, “It’s been a lot lately.”

“I can imagine,” there was something comforting about the way he said it, like he understood without needing me to explain everything.

Before I could respond, footsteps sounded from the kitchen and my attention shifts toward the noise almost immediately. A moment later, Caelum appears in the doorway, and the second his eyes found me, his expression changes.

The smile that spread across his face was small, but warm enough to make something flutter in my chest.. “Delilah,” I couldn’t stop myself from smiling back, “You made it.”

“I told you I would.”

His smile grew slightly as he looked at me. “I know,” he says softly, when a hand suddenly touches his arm.

My eyes drops to it, a figure stepping out from behind him, Olivia coming to view

The fuck was she doing here

She looks at me, and for a brief second, something almost nervous flickers across her face before she covers it with a small smile. “Delilah.”

“Olivia.”

“Um.. I didn’t know you were coming over.”

I kept my expression pleasant, even though my mind was already racing, “I didn’t know you were going to be here either,” my gaze shifted to Caelum as he rubs the back of his neck, suddenly looking very interested in the floor.

Olivia glanced between the two of us before turning her attention back to him. “Your mom was looking for you, she said you needed to help set the table.”

“Right,” he nod

She gave him a small smile. “You better go before HR comes looking for you herself.”
