A Kiss At Midnight (Delilah and Caelum) novel Chapter 119

Don’t stare

Don’t stare

I stared anyway, looking at how perfect they fitted each other.

We made our way into the dining room, the table was already mostly set, but there were still a few plates and glasses left to arrange., Caelum started placing the cutlery while Olivia picked up a stack of plates.

“This is bringing back memories,” Olivia said, looking around the room with a soft laugh, “do you remember when I knocked over that bowl of spaghetti all over the table?”

He groans. “Oh, God. I remember.”

“I was so scared your mom was going to yell at me.”

“You were about to cry.”

“I was six,” she laughs, “and then you told your mom you did it.” I kept my expression neutral, reaching for a glass and placing it on the table, “you were such a little knight in shining armor,” Olivia said.

He shakes his head, but there was a faint smile on his face. “I was trying to save you from getting scolded.”

“And you did and ended getting scolded for it,” I swallowed as something inside me twist, not finding the story cute or funny. And I definitely didn’t like hearing how Caelum had once been her little knight in shining armor.

It shouldn’t have bothered me,, I mean, she was talking about something that had happened when they were children. It was harmless.

I set down a glass a little harder than necessary, my jaw clenches. They had memories, years of them, one that I had no parts

with.

Olivia glanced at me as she reached for another plate. “You know. I honestly didn’t realize you two were this close,” my gaze drifts to her as she smiles, but there was something almost too curious about it.

“I knew he was tutoring you,” she continues, “I just didn’t realize things had gotten…this close,” her gaze briefly flickers toward Caelum, “Matthew and Amelia are very much accommodating, always being like that with everyone.”

There was something about the way she said everyone that made the comment feel less innocent than she wanted it to

sound

I gave her a polite smile. “Yeah, there’re pretty welcoming. Although I suppose being welcoming and actually making someone feel welcome aren’t always the same thing,” the words slipped out lightly, almost conversationally.

Olivia’s smile paused, her eyes met mine for a second and she doesn’t say anything immediately. A small smile plastered across her face, tilting her head as she says instead. “Anyway, thank you for what you said to me at the mall

“For what?”

“You actually gave me something to think about and it kind of knocked some sense into me realizing what I would have lost.”

TEASING MOMENTS

Before I could respond, Caelum looked up from the cutlery, his eyes moving between Olivia and me, a faint crease forming between his brows.

“What did she mean?”

Olivia smiles softly, knowing she had gotten his attention more with that and her lips parted ready to explain when footstep sounded behind us and Amelia walks in carrying a tray of plates.

I immediately stepped toward her, “Here, let me help you with that,” offering, I take one side of the tray, grateful for the excuse to busy myself with something, anything that didn’t involve looking at Caelum.

Together, Amelia and I carried it to the table and carefully set the plates down. A moment later, Matthew walked in carrying two jugs, one filled with what looks like orange juice and the other with water.

“Looks like we’ve got everything covered,” he said.

Smiling faintly, keeping my attention fixed on the table as Amelia claps her hand once, saying. “Alright, dinner is ready. Let’s get everyone seated.”

Everyone began moving toward the table, I followed behind them, trying to act like I wasn’t affected by what was going on at the other side of the table.

Caelum reaches the table first, pulling out the chair beside his. “Deli..” before he could finish what he was saying, Olivia slips into the seat he had pulled out.

“Thank you,” she smiles up at him with a slight blush that stained her cheeks, then after a second her attention drifted to me, and her expression shifts into something almost innocently sweet.

I fight back the eye roll threatening to escape, pulling out the chair opposite from her, taking my seat. Olivia gaze drifts from me to Caelum who was standing beside her, then she taps on the seat beside her, smiling up at him softly.

“You can sit right here next to me if you..” her words were cut off when he walks past her and over the table without hesistation, pulling out a chair beside me, and then taking the spot.

Biting at the wall of my mouth, I kept my expression perfectly neutral. But when I caught the brief flicker of disappointment on Olivia’s face, I couldn’t help but feel a slight ping in my chest, wondering if I was being too childish.

I had no reason to be angry about her presence here, did I?

“Shall we?” I was snapped out of my thoughts when Amilia spoke again.

I settle back into my seat, letting the conversation around the table slowly pull me in.

Amelia was telling Matthew about something that had happened earlier that week, while he kept interrupting with little corrections that she completely ignores.

Smiling into my glass, listening to them bicker like they had done it a hundred times before.

Dinner had barely started, yet somehow, everyone already seemed comfortable. Plates were being passed around, conversations overlapping, and Amelia kept insisting we all take more food despite the fact that none of us had even finished what was already on our plates.

For a moment, I simply sat there and let myself enjoy it when she gestures toward the food. “I hope everything is to everyone’s taste.”

Olivia immediately smiled. “Your cooking is always the best, Amelia. Seriously, nobody makes food like you do.”

This made her laugh. “You always say that.”

Because it’s true.”

“Well, I’m glad you’re here. It’s been a while,” she responded warmly with a small smile on her lips.

My attention drift down to my plate, trying to keep myself out of the conversation. While Olivia suddenly looked a little sheepish.

“I hope I’m not intruding. I know this was kind of last-minute.”

“Oh, never,” Amelia assured her. “You and Caelum have been friends for years which practically makes you a part of the family, which means your always more than welcome here.”

“You always say the nicest things, Amelia. No wonder everyone loves coming over here,” she smiles warmly then reaches for the bowl beside her, “Hey, do you want some?” she held it out a bowl of chicken salad toward him before he could even ask.

He glanced at it. “Yeah, thanks.”

She smiled and passed it over. “You always liked this,” she replies, her voice dripping like honey.

My eyes flicker toward her, my throat runs dry as I grit my teeth together but say nothing, focusing on my food instead.

Caelum didn’t seem bothered by it and simply spoon some onto his plate while she continues eating with a pleased smile dancing across her lips

I looked down at my food, finding it more interesting instead of being occupied with how causal they were together.

“So, Delilah,” Amelia said, pulling my attention back to her, “how have your classes been going?”

I swallowed before answering. “Pretty good, actually.”

“Pretty good?” Matthew repeated, “that sounds suspiciously modest.”

Letting out a small laugh. “I’ve been doing better, way much better.” Caelum turns tooon over at me and I caught his gaze for a second before looking back at Amelia, “I’ve actually been trying harder this semester,” I add, melt to nearly choke on my food when I feel a hand land on my thigh, giving it a soft squeeze.

“She has,” he says casually while I force myself to gulped down the food in my mouth, feeling his body heat deep through mine.

How in the fuck was he really doing this, right in the table with his parent present

I would say, he has gotten way way bolder than I thought. Not that I minded, and was very much impressed and at the same time feeling a shiver running through my body just by the feel of his hand on my thigh.

“She puts in a lot of work,” he added, making Amelia smile.

“I knew you would get there.”

“I still have a long way to go.”

“That’s not the point,” Caelum says and my head turned slightly toward him, but he wasn’t looking anyone else now, “you’re already doing it,” his hand moves up to my inner thigh where he rubs his fingers around.
