DELILAH POV

I sat at the cafeteria table, pushing my food around with my fork without actually eating much. My thought had been all mingled up through out the weekened and as much as I didn’t want to think about Friday.

About him

I couldn’t help it, and with everything, I still had my sister case which was all tangled up. I was planning on checking her room again for more clues and finding out her friends who can give more light to what had happen. Ahs if they knew more about her.

As if I didn’t already have enough sitting heavy on my mind. I had thought things between Caelum and me were solid, for the first time in a long time, I’d allowed myself to believe that someone wasn’t going to walk away from me.

Apparently, I had been wrong

“Delilah,” I barely gave a reaction, my mind still a mess, “Delilah,” my head slowly lifts up to find Kaia staring at me, “Where the hell are you?you’ve been staring at your food for, like, five minutes.”

“He is planning on taking Olivia to the fall festival,” the words fell off my lips before I could even think about it, my gaze rests on my barely touched food, having no appetite whatsoever.

“What..” Kaia’s voice came a second after, like she was in disbelief from what I had told her

“Caelum’s taking Olivia to the fall festival’ I repeat again, biting back the ping I felt in my chest and the tightness in my throat.

“What? Caelum,” she said, almost stumbling over the name like she couldn’t believe she had heard me correctly, “Caelum is taking Olivia?”

My gaze drifts up to meet her, letting out a frustrating sigh.”Yes, Caelum.”

She stares at me for a second, completely confused.”Wait a second,” leaning closer, “I thought things were going really well between you two.”

Iscoffs at this. “Yeah, so did I,” I say, stabbing at a piece of food with my fork,” he kisses me and then tells me he’s planning to take Olivia to the fall festival.”

Her mouth drops open. “That fucking twat,” she immediately looked like she regretted saying it, but only for half a second, “I’m sorry, but seriously..”

Sheshakes her head, disbelief written all over her face, “I can’t believe he would actually do something like that,” her expression hardened, “he’s no different.” she shakes her head again, looking genuinely disappointed. “And I actually thought he was different.”

Her expression softens as she studied me for a moment. “Are you..” her voice dropped, “are you okay?”-

“Yeah.” I began saying, the word barely making it out before I scoff again, shaking my head, “No, I’m not fucking okay.” staring down at my plate, I blink rapidly, “I’m anything but okay.”

My fingers tightens around my fork “It feels like my heart has been stomp on over and over again, and I’m just suppose to sit here and pretend it doesn’t hurt.”

She didn’t say anything at first as she stares at me before quietly saying, “maybe it hurts this much because you’re in love with him.” I went still.

Was that really why this hurt so much? was that why hearing Caelum was taking Olivia to the fall festival felt like someone had reach inside my chest and given it a squeeze

I had spent so much time trying to convince myself that what we had was temporary, something uncomplicated, that I could walk away from whenever I wanted. But somewhere along the way, it had stop being uncomplicated and I thought about the way I look for him whenever I entered a room.

The way his smile could change my entire mood and the way I trusted him with parts of myself I didn’t let anyone else see. The way the thought of losing him scares me more than I wanted to admit. My throat tightens as the realization dawn on

I was in love with him

I had fallen in love with Caelum Hart

I bit the inside of my lip, staring down at my untouch food, and somehow, knowing that only made everything hurt worse. Because if I was being honest with myself now,, it suddenly felt like none of it had been worth it.

Not when he clearly didn’t see our relationship the way I did, not when he could still choose someone else without thinking twice.

Kaia’s voice pulls me out of my thoughts. “So what are you going to do now?”

I stared at my food for a moment before answering. “I’m ending the deal,” her brows lifts as I pushed my fork around my plate, “the tutoring arrangement, everything. There’s no point in going ahead with it anymore. It would be better if we just went back to how things were before.”

She reaches across the table and took my hand, giving it a gentle squeeze, “Are you sure you can actually keep your distance from him?”

My throat tightens as I gulped. “I have to try,” forcing a small shrug. “It’s probably for the best anyway. Besides, I have other things to worry about.”

Her brows furrows, “Like what?”

For half a second, Daisy’s name hovers at the tip of my tongue but I quickly pushed the thought away. “There’s a chance 1 could get into Northwestern,” I said instead, “I need to focus on that.”

“That’s fucking great Delilah..” She says excited at this, then nods. “I also think you focusing on this opportunity is better as well..” before I could say anything else, her eyes shifted over my shoulder and her jaw tightened.

My brows crease together, glancing back. A few tables away, Elias stood with a group of jocks and cheerleaders, one of the girls was practically hanging off his arm, laughing at something someone had said.

But he wasn’t looking at her as his eyes were fixed directly on Kaia. My gaze returns back at my best friend, watching as her jaw/were still clenched.

Then she lowers her gaze to her food, suddenly very interested in whatever was on her plate. Something had clearly happened between them.

I had no idea what, and judging by the look on her face, she wasn’t exactly eager to tell me.
