lum rested his head against mine, his face turns toward me as he stares into my eyes and I do the same, staring back at his.

For a moment, neither of us said anything but then I catch the look in his eyes and the question that had settle in them.

His jaw clenches, the muscle ticking beneath his skin as though he was holding back whatever had been running through his mind.

I knew that look

One thing I’d learned about Caelum, especially when it came to me, was that he tends to hesitate whenever something was bothering him. He could let something eat away at him without saying a damn word, even when it was clearly driving him crazy.

And right now..he was doing exactly that

Tilting my head slightly. “Out with it.”

His eyes flickers over my face, “What?”

“Whatever you’re thinking, just say it.”

He releases a slow sigh, his forehead still resting against mine. And he doesn’t say anything for a second before saying softl, “You make my heart race.”

My stomach flips at this as his eyes stays locked on mine. “Do you even realize that?” he contineues softly, and I gulped, “Sometimes I can’t think straight because of you. You get into my head, and suddenly I can’t focus on anything else.”

Adrenaline pumps through my body as heart kicks against my ribs so hard I almost hated it for betraying

  1. me.

I wanted to believe him..God, I wanted to. But I couldn’t as I force myself to remember what this was. He was attracted to me, desired me, there was no denying that.

But attraction wasn’t the same thing as feelings, lust wasn’t love. And just because he could make my heart race with a few carefully chosen words didn’t mean his heart was doing the same.

I couldn’t afford to mistake his desire for something deeper

So I steadied my breathing, reminding myself that his words didn’t mean what some foolish part of me wanted them to mean, that this was about desire and the lust that came with it..nothing more.

My heart shouldn’t be racing over every little compliment he drops

Smiling, placing my hand against his chest as I slowly push him back, creating a little distance between us, needing the space.Maybe because standing this close to him was making it too difficult to remember all the reasons I had told myself to stay away.

His gaze follows the movement, but then his eyes drops to my neck and I felt my stomach tighten as his

gaze lingers there for a second, right where the faint marks he had left earlier were still visible before his eyes lifts back to mine.

Something shifts in his expression then he spoke, “I saw you with Landon in the hallway today,” my heart immediately began to race again, “he dragged you into an empty classroom.”

The words made my stomach drop. had he followed us? seen me crying? seen how badly I had fallen apart in that room?

Gulping hard, I force my expression to remain neutral even as panic crawls beneath my skin. My hands folds against my chest, almost instinctively,, using them as a shield.

“Did you follow me?“my voice sounded steadier than I felt.

Caelum’s brows drew together. “No, I wasn’t following you,” he lets a small pause settle between us before adding, “I was trying to get to you when I saw you both together.”

My fingers tightened against my arms. “I needed to talk to you, Delilah, but then you went off with Landon,” the way he said Landon’s name carried an edge, bitterness and I wasn’t sure if there was jealousy in it or it was once again all in my head.

Before I could respond, he steps closer, closing the small distance I had created, our faces were suddenly close again, way too close.

His eyes held mine. “I thought you were over him.”

I slowly caught my bottom lip between my teeth, buying myself a second to think. Then I shrug, forcing my expression into something casual.

“We were just talking,” I let my shoulders rise and fall, “It was no big deal.”

“No big deal?” he repeated my words, his jaw clenching as he stares at me, “What could you two possibly want to talk about after barely speaking to each other for a month? are you really not over Landon?” he asked, his voice quieter now, “I thought you were. At least, you gave me the impression that you were.”

I took another step back, “Are you really going to talk about Landon..” I exhale, trying to keep my voice steady, “I don’t bring up Olivia’s name whenever we’re together, and I’d appreciate it if you didn’t do the

same.”

His brow furrows. “What does Olivia have to do with this?” he sounded genuinely confused, “this is between us.”

“Exactly,” the word came out as a whisper that somehow sounded like a yell, “This..whatever this is right now, it’s between us.” My chest tightens, “You don’t have to include Landon whenever we’re together, you don’t have to be bothered by the fact that I talked to him today or whether I still have feelings for him.”

I pause, forcing myself to breathe, “just like I don’t bother you about hanging out with Olivia or what your feelings for her were.”

Fucking hell, Delilah. Why did I say that?

I hoped I didn’t sound jealous, hoped I hadn’t just made my feelings painfully obvious.

I couldn’t look at him anymore as my gaze moved away from his, suddenly finding everything else in the

room far more interesting. But I could still feel his eyes on me, watching me.

ping, I bite the inside of my bottom lip as I tried to keep myself from looking back at him.

“Delilah,” his voice was soft when he calls my name, almost like he was trying to reach me but I took another step back, turning away from him as I closed my eyes.

I didn’t want this, didn’t want our last time together to end with a fight. If I was really going to end this.if this was truly whatever existed between us was supposed to stop, then I didn’t want it ending like this.

Not with us arguing over Landon and Olivia, not with jealousy neither of us wanted to admit to. I took a slow breath before turning back around and immediately regretted it when I found him staring at me.

With those same looks, those damn looks that somehow manages to knock the breath right out of me, leaving my legs feeling weak.

I quickly drew in a breath, forcing a smile onto my face

“Forget about the last few minutes, okay?” his expression didn’t change, but I didn’t give him a chance to respond. Instead, my eyes drops to his stained shirt, “And you need to change, you can’t walk around with a stained shirt.”

Turning toward my dresser, I reache for one of the drawers, certain I had neatly folded one of his sweatshirts inside, the one I had taken. When I pull the drawer open, my eyes lands on it immediately, neatly folded and perfectly placed.

Like some treasured piece I had carefully kept instead of simply tossing it into a drawer like I should have

I stare at it for a second before reaching in, grabbing two of the shirts, pulling them out. But before I could straighten up,something slips from between the clothes, falling to the ground.

My gaze drops to it and I froze as my eyes followed the movement, and my face immediately flushes a thousand times red.
