ENDING IT

Caelum stares at me, confusion tightening across his face

“What?” the word came out almost as a whisper, edge with disbelief.

I drove my fork into the scrambled eggs, then let it fall, the clink against the plate cut through the quiet. Lifting my eyes to him, I force my expression cold.

“You heard me,” I said, “I’m ending the deal.”

“You mean..”

“Today is our last day, all of it ends here,” he went still, eyes widen betrayes the shock he refuse to show anywhere else.

Holding his gaze, I ignore the pain beneath my ribs, “I already spoke to Mrs. Malakai about tutoring, she knows everything. And I have enough support to get into Northeastern.”

His fingers tightens against the table “I’m grateful for what you’ve done,” I continued, making myself finish before I could reconsider, “but there’s no reason to continue, epecially now that things are working out with Olivia.”

Something shifts in his expression, then his gaze drops for half a second, before returning to mine and his brow creases,, not saying anything. Like he was still trying to process everything I had just said.

“You’re taking her to the Fall Festival, soclearly, she’s the one you want,” jealousy burns through me, sharp and humiliating that I had to bury it beneath a small, empty smile, there’s no place for me in that, we don’t need each other anymore.”

His hand loosen against the table, then tightens again, as if he were trying to hold on to something without reaching for it and I pretended I didn’t care what he would say next.

Pretended I hadn’t wanted him to stop me, that ending this hadn’t broken something I could never repair.

Then he shoves himself away from the table, getting to his feet. “Delilah,” he says my name like a warning, a plea.

Then he moves toward me, reaching out as though he could stop me from ending everything simply by getting close enough. I shot to my feet, the food between us had gone cold, forgotten the moment the conversation turned into something neither of us could take back.

Stepping away from him, “Don’t..”

He stops, his hand hovering uselessly between us before dropping to his side, “Delilah, just..”

Lettimf out a sharp, humorless laugh, “You can’t seriously think this thing between us was going to continue.”

His brows drew together, “That’s not what I think.”

“Then what do you think?” I demanded, “that we were going to keep fucking while you take Olivia to the Fall Festival?”

His jaw tightens, “I never said that.”

“Well clearly you didn’t have you since you didn’t expect things to break between us,” the words came too quickly, too easily.

I folded my arms across my chest, trying to hold myself together as my pulse hammers beneath my skin, “there is no way I’m going to have your dick buried in me like I’m some fucking second choice, while you while you pursued someone else.”

“That’s not what I’m doing.”

“I didn’t think you were the type to do that either,” the hurt flashes across his face as he shook his head, dragging a hand through his hair.

“Just let me explain, It isn’t what you think.”

“There is nothing there to explain, Caelum,” my voice cracked like a whip, watching him open his mouth, but nothing came out, and I give another bitter laugh, “I do have some fucking self respect,” I said, forcing the words past the tightness in my throat.

His expression shifted, “Delilah..”

“This should have ended a long time ago.” I gulp, refusing to let him see how badly my voice wanted to break, “Honestly, it should have ended the moment you told me you were taking Olivia to the Fall Festival.”

“Delilah, listen to me.”

“No,” shaking my head hard enough to make my hair brush my cheeks, “you don’t get to tell me I’m misunderstanding something when you haven’t even given me anything to understand.”

He took a slow breath, his eyes fix on mine and for one dangerous second, I wanted him to cross the distance between us, to say the one thing that would make me stay.

Instead, he softens his voice..“Okay, I get it. I understand why you’re upset that I told you I was taking Olivia to the Fall Festival,” he said carefully, “but can we please talk this out?”
