“But we shouldn’t leave either,” Landon added, “We can give him space and still be here for him.”

odded, that was exactly what I wanted. For him to know that when he eventually needed someone, we would still be here.

Landon suddenly looked around the room. “Has anyone eaten?” nobody answered and he sighed. “I knew it.” Then he looks at me, “You?”

Shaking my head, “I don’t think I’m hungry.”

“Even if you’re not hungry, you need to eat. I’ll order something light,” before anyone could respond, he walked toward the kitchen, pulling out his phone.

Kaia leans toward me, her voice drops to almost a whisper, “I can’t believe his father missed his wife’s funeral. Who the fuck does that?” she glanced toward the open bedroom door before continuing, “his wife dies, his son is falling apart, and he isn’t fucking here when they need him most.”

I knew about Jace and his father, knew there were reasons behind their distance. Reasons I didn’t have the right to explain for him. So I said nothing and only sighed, looking toward the bedroom.

Then I heard movement, causing my head snapped toward the doorway, watching him standing, everyone immediately got to their feet as he stepped out of his mother’s room. He didn’t look at us and instead walked toward the entrance, Landon returning from the kitchen at the same time, his phone still in his hand.

“What..” he stopped when he saw Jace heading for the door and we all followed, watching him open the door, stepping outside. My breath caught when I saw the person standing a couple of distance from the house.

Caelum.

He dressed entirely in black. I hadn’t seen him since Festive Fall and he hadn’t been at the funeral. Now he was here, my heart gave an uncomfortable little squeeze.

“Are you okay?” Kaia’s voice pulled me back and I gulped, nodding.

“Yeah,” the word barely came out as Jace stood in front of Caelum.

I couldn’t hear what they were saying from where we stood but Caelum’s mouth moved as he spoke quietly to him and he simply stared at him.

Then Caelum stepped forward, wrapping his arms around Jace. For a moment, he remained completely still, then his arms slowly came up around Caelum and his shoulders started shaking.

He was crying, he was finally crying. He buries his face against Caelum’s shoulder, his body trembling as the grief he had been holding inside finally broke through.

I didn’t know what Caelum had said to him, didn’t know what had finally reached him but I knew he had needed this.

The teacher was talking, atleast, I assum she was

I sat at my desk, staring at the board while absolutely none of the words being written on it registered in my brain. My pen resting between my fingers, but I hadn’t written anything for the last ten minutes.

My mind was somewhere else

More specifically, it was back at Jace’s house and at that doorway, back to the moment Caelum had walked up to him and said something I couldn’t hear. What exactly was it that he had said.

I had replayed that moment so many times that I was beginning to drive myself crazy. Jace had completely broken down against his shoulder, this was something I still couldn’t understand it.

“Miss Quinn..” I snapped out of my thought at the sound of my name to find the teacher staring directly at me, “Are you with us?”

A few students chuckled as I cleared my throat. “Yes.”

“Then perhaps you can tell us what I just explained.”

Shit

My gaze drifted toward the board, then back at her. And when I didn’t give a responsive after a couple of second, the teacher sighs, “Pay attention, Miss Quinn..” she says as she turns back toward the board.

Lowering my head, I mentally scold myself. Then at the same time; how was I suppose to focus when my brain had decided that one conversation I hadn’t even heard was suddenly the most important mystery in the world.

And it wasn’t helping that I hadn’t seen Caelum since that night. I had texted him and had gotten no response, same with Leo. Which was strange considering I always get a text back almost instantly from him. I stared down at my phone beneath the desk.

Also, I hadn’t expected Caelum to talk to me after everything that happened between us, but avoiding me this completely was starting to feel deliberate. Maybe he was avoiding me, actually, there was no maybe

about it.

If I was being honest with myself, I had been looking for him, between classes. In the hallways, near the library even around the music room. Every time I saw someone with dark hair from behind, I would glance twice.

And every time it wasn’t him, I’d feel a strange mixture of relief and disappointment

The bell finally rang, and I immediately close my notebook with a sigh and shoving my things into my bag. The hallway was already filling with students when I stepped outside.

And then I saw Jace, he was walking with Landon and Elias.NFor the first time since his mother’s funeral, he looked somewhat like himself, not completely but enough.

He was talking about practice, he’d stayed late the previous evening and was already talking about the next

game.

Landon caught sight of me. “Hey.”

Walked toward them. “How are you?”

Jace looked at me. “Fine,” I knew better than to believe that one word but I didn’t push him, “Practice?”,

“After school.”

Elias nodded, “He’s been spending almost every free minute either studying or at practice.”

“I’ve noticed,” Landon added, “I practically had to drag him away from the rink yesterday.”/

Jace rolls his eyes. “I was fine.”

“How are classes?” I asked.

“Fine,” he responds almost robotic, and I don’t point that out, knowing it wasn’t important, as long as he was responding to me

“Eating?” this made him give me a look and I raised a brow at him, adding, ” “Just asking.”

“I eat.”

Landon snorted. “When we remind him.” Jace shakes his head, walking ahead of us and I watched him for a moment. He was coping, or at least trying to.

He had thrown himself into everything he could, school, sport, assignments, practice. Maybe staying busy was the only way he knew how to keep moving and as long as he knew we were there, I wasn’t going to force him to grieve the way I thought he should.

Then the say goodbyes to the boys as they walk ahead of me while I stopped in front of my locker to drop the book I was with and take the next one for the next period.

My gaze wandered round the hallway, immediately started searching again. I looked toward the stairwell, the doors near the library and there was no sight of him.

“Looking for someone?” In turned to find Kaia standing beside me, leaning on a locker closet it mine and wander when she had gotten here

“No,” she raised an eyebrow and I sighed, “Maybe.”

She followed my gaze, “Caelum?” I didn’t answer, she didn’t need me to. “Still haven’t gotten the chance to talk to him yet.”
