Chapter 51

“We have searched everywhere we could think of and there is still no sight of the nerd.”

I let out a long sigh, resisting the urge to bang my head against the nearest locker. Seriously, how the hell was this guy harder to find than a celebrity hiding from paparazzi. I could’ve sworn I’d seen him in one of Mrs. Malakia’s AP classes before, not once but multiple times.

He was usually sitting with the other nerds, looking like he hadn’t seen sunlight in weeks while discussing whatever nerds” discussed when normal people weren’t around.

So why the fuck was he suddenly impossible to find

It wasn’t like the guy was some criminal mastermind, at least I didn’t think he was. The more I thought about it, the more convinced I became that he wasn’t the one behind any of this.

The second I had looked at him that day, he had practically folded in on himself, looking terrified. So no, there was no way he’d come up with something like this on his own.

Someone had put him up to it and had told him exactly what to do. While I had a very strong suspicion about who that someone might be, I wasn’t about to start accusing people without proof. I wanted facts first, then I would start ruining lives) the proper way.

At least one thing had worked out in my favor. Mrs. Hudge had agreed to let me retake the assessment. Honestly, that woman deserved some kind of award, or maybe therapy, probably therapy.

Convincing her hadn’t exactly been easy, I had spent almost twenty minutes standing in her classroom explaining why I was convinced my paper had been switched. The entire time she had looked at me like she was waiting for me to admit it was all a joke.

Thankfully Kaia had been there, without her, Mrs. Hudge probably would have kicked me out after the first five minutes. Eventually she had agreed, mostly because, according to her, this was the first time she’d ever seen me look desperate about anything related to schoolwork.

Which was honestly a little offensive. What the hell was that supposed to mean?. I put effort into school, a lot of effort. Maybe not in the way teachers wanted, but effort was effort.

Did she think looking this good happened by accident, because it didn’t. My outfit was planned, hair was planned. makeup was planned. My accessories also were planned, with every morning was basically a project.

A very important project

Looking hot while dealing with idiots was a full time job

People never appreciated the work that went into maintaining perfection. Tragic, really.

“But that’s beside the point.” I muttered.

Kaia looked over. “What is?” I blinked, realise I had said that out loud.

Oops.

1 waved a hand dismissively. “Nothing.”

She narrowed her eyes. The look immediately told me she wasn’t buying it, but before she could question me further, she snapped her fingers.

“How about asking Caelu.”

“Absolutely the fuck not,” the response came out so fast that even I surprised myself, causing her to immediately stopped walking and she slowly turned toward me, smiling

Oh no

That smile never meant anything good

“Hm..Interesting.”

“There is nothing interesting about what I just said.”

“Mm hmm.” I rolled my eyes so hard they almost got stuck.

“Don’t start.”

“I’m not starting anything.”

“You absolutely are.”

She laughed. “Why are you so defensive?”

“I’m not defensive.”

“You just cut me off before I even finished saying his name.”

“Because I knew exactly where you were going with it.”

“And..”

“And absolutely not,” I folded my arms, “I am not going to him.”

Why would I? Besides, there were more important things to focus on, like proving I hadn’t failed and finding the idiot who switched my paper, also figure out who was pulling the strings.

“And anyway,” I continued. “I need to retake the assessment first.”

Her lips slowly curved upward, once again I regretted speaking, as she give me that look again, the one that never led anywhere good.

“Oh.”

I fight the urges to rollmy eyes. “What now.” She grinned, raising a brow as she stared at me

“So you want to retake the assessment before going to him.” My gaze remained on her blankly, wondering why she kept teasing me with him, knowing fully well there was nothing there.

“For everything holy, Kaia.”

“What?”

“That is not what I said.”

“It kind of is.”

“It literally isn’t.”

“It kind of sounds like it.”

1 groaned slighly, before raising a brow as I continued, “why do you keep trying to make it sound like there’s something

Mostly because this conversation was beginning to irritate me, a lot. “There is nothing.” Kaia raised an eyebrow, and I raised both back. “There is absolutely nothing.”
