NOT THAT BAD

When we came to a stop again, it was at a small din tucked away on the quieter side of town. It was far enough from the gallery, which honestly was a breathing space for us, knowing we didn’t have to look over our shoulders constantly.
Though the drive to our next destination had been a bit longer than I had expected, I didn’t mind since we needed every second of it to calm ourselves down.
The small bell above the door chimes as we made our way inside, mygaze wandered the space, the little cafe was excelled the kind of place I would imagine in old movies..checkerboard, faded blue booth, warm yellow light that hanged above each table and the nice simile of coffee with fried food that lingered on the air.
“I think we order at the counter,” Caelum said as we walked toward the front, “what do you want?”
I glanced up at the menu board hanging above the counter. “A bacon cheeseburger,” I replied, ” need something that makes up for the fact that I nearly died today.”
A small smile tugged at his lips, “Fair enough.”
“I’ll find us a table.”
“Alright,” he walks toward the waitress behind the counter while I make my way over to one of the booths near the window, sliding into the soft worn leather seat before resting my hands on the table.
The surface was decorated with little blue patterns that matched the the old fashioned theme, this kinda made the the whole place feel strangely comforting.
Taking deep breathes, I lean my head back, closing my eyes. It wasn’t even 7pm yet, and I felt completely exhausted. Who knew my day would turn into running from security guards, stealing forgotten artifacts, and hiding in dark hallways.
Still..I couldn’t say I regretted it, it was probably the most exciting thing that had happened to me in a long time.
A few minutes later, Caelum returned with two bottles of lemonade and slid one across the table toward me.
“Thanks,” I grabbed it immediately and took a long drink, letting the cold sweetness settle me.
He chuckled as he sat opposite me, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this drained before.”
Placing the bottle down and let out a slightly dramatic sigh. “I don’t think I’ve ever sprinted for my life before either.”
“That’s understandable,” he smiled as he opened his drink, then carefully placed the bag containing the artifacts beside him.
My eyes immediately widened as quickly grabbed it and pulled it closer to me. “Hide that,” I whispered, “before someone
notices.”
He laughed quietly. “I still can’t believe we actually did that.”
I looked down at the bag, a nervous smile appearing. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt this guilty and excited at the same time.”
“If it helps,” he said, leaning back, “those things were probably going to stay locked away for years anyway.”
He had a point
I peeked inside the bag slightly, just enough to see the carefully wrapped pieces. Even now, they amazed me.
