Tears cascaded silently from her eyes. Her lips parted as if to speak, but she felt everything that needed to be said had already been shared with Bernard. Lowering her gaze, she stared at the lifeless, pallid face before her.
“Fool, no matter how much you bleed, you’re still my husband. How could I ever be scared? I’m not, so why did you have to go off alone to a place like this?”
The regret of not having the chance to say her final goodbyes gnawed at her, but Bernard didn’t care about regrets; he just kept things from her.
But if she hadn't realized that the Bernard before her was a replica, did that mean she would never find his body? That he would be forever entombed under the ice and snow, buried beneath the mountains?
Bernard was ready to meet his end between heaven and earth, fearing she would follow him. So he created a fake robot to deceive her for a lifetime. But Bernard...
Even if you made a robot that looked exactly like you, it still wouldn’t be you. I could accept being deceived for a lifetime, but now the lie has been uncovered. Can I come to find you now?
You certainly wouldn't allow it, otherwise, you wouldn’t have made a fake robot to deceive me, nor would you have come to the mountains alone, enduring the agony of your wounds, keeping company with the white snow and deadwood.
My Bernard, foolish to the extreme, also loved me to the extreme. Even though it’s a pity I wasn’t by his side when he died, his love makes me unafraid of death.
Instead, I feel that dying together would fulfill a lifelong promise. But Bernard, who went ahead, would you wait for me on the road to the afterlife?
Eleanor had no answers, only holding Bernard's icy body, sitting in the snow, refusing to let go no matter who tried to pull her away.
As the snowstorm howled, the wind wailed like a lament, striking everyone's ears, yet no one spoke. Silence tolled in the serene mountains, marking the final moments.
Exhausted, Damian kneeled in the snow, staring with disbelief at the closed eyes of the face before him.
In that moment, Damian realized his father was truly gone. The father who seemed invincible, died on the mountain, just before a breakthrough.
But he had said, just two more months, and it would have been a success. Why couldn't his father hold on a little longer?
Or was it because Damian was too naive, not completing the surgery two months earlier?

The readers' comments on the novel: A Second Chance At Forever novel (Eleanor and Bernard)
Loved the story, many times caught in so much actually crying with the situation. Wish had more chapters to a better ending....
It's weird that the story went from narrative to slang use. Good story so far though...
