A Second Chance At Forever novel (Eleanor and Bernard) novel Chapter 1549

For the sake of her son, Eleanor couldn't bring herself to follow Bernard into the afterlife. Instead, she aged overnight, her once youthfully smooth face now etched with lines of sorrow, her striking eyes hollow, devoid of any spark.

She had said, being a mother meant she couldn't just do as she pleased anymore. So, at Bernard's graveside, she asked him to wait for her until their son got married. Then, she would join him. She even joked that if Bernard didn't wait, she'd take back her promise of being together in the next life, never to meet again.

Eleanor didn't attend Bernard's funeral. It was only later, when she found the strength to visit his grave, stumbling and frail, that she spoke these words. No one remembered them, except for Damian, who had supported her to see his father one last time.

That night, Eleanor collapsed in the snow, unconscious. It took a week in the hospital before she woke up.

Because she wasn't there, Bernard's body was kept in a chilled casket for a week, not buried until she awoke. With vacant eyes and white hair, she only managed one last glance at him before hurriedly turning away.

How Bernard was buried, the arrangement of the cemetery, and the choice of his photograph for the memorial - Eleanor had no part in any of it. She just sat by her bed, clutching the cold pillow next to her, imagining Bernard still alive.

If he could see her now, with her white hair, would he feel a pang of sorrow?

She thought he would.

But Bernard, always so jealous and insecure, took comfort whenever he saw her worry over him. It made him happy for a long time, feeling loved. But now, he would never see the toll his absence had taken on her, how it kept her up at night. He would regret that, wouldn't he?

No one answered Eleanor. She was like a lonely old lady, clinging to a cold pillow, spending whole nights lost in her memories. Who could imagine this frail woman was once so beautiful that she captivated Bernard's heart for a lifetime?
