Eleanor's fingers traced through Damian's hair at the base of his skull, her expression remarkably serene as if she had already come to terms with the hard truths of life. "When are you planning on getting married?"
Damian stiffened, his eyes misty with emotion, slowly lifting before gently releasing Eleanor. "Mom... I haven't found the right girl yet."
Seeing her own reflection in his eyes, Eleanor reached out to touch her face. "Look at me, living is harder than dying. Wouldn't it be better to let me go and join your father?"
In his youth, it was his parents who held him back, but as he grew older, the roles reversed, and it was he who held onto them. It was this tethering that spared him from orphanhood. So, could he be selfish just one more time?
Damian grasped Eleanor's arm, pleading, "Mom, just wait a bit longer. Soon, I'll find a girl I love, and then, I'll marry her, okay?"
Unable to bear hurting her son, Eleanor nodded as she always did. "Then tomorrow, I'll go to the chapel and light a candle for you, praying you find your beloved soon..."
Damian murmured an agreement, but deep down, he was praying to the heavens not to grant his mother's wish. He was willing to forsake marriage for his mother's love.
He delayed marriage and brought home the robot left by Bernard, telling Eleanor that his father's last words were stored in its programming, revealing a little each day. If she wanted to hear everything he had to say, she had to keep living.
Initially, Eleanor was reluctant to face the robot that bore Bernard's likeness. But the moment it spoke, she froze, then spent day after day in the study, listening to Bernard's most romantic words.
It was as if, unable to find her back then, he had sent messages to her through Mr. Law's number, bombarding her with texts to commemorate her absence.
Now, though he was the first to depart, fearing she might succumb to loneliness or follow him in death, he left a robot to declare his love daily.

The readers' comments on the novel: A Second Chance At Forever novel (Eleanor and Bernard)
Loved the story, many times caught in so much actually crying with the situation. Wish had more chapters to a better ending....
It's weird that the story went from narrative to slang use. Good story so far though...
