Chapter 617
Chapter 617
FAYE
By the time I made my way back to the pack house, I had tried to push the events in the woods to the back of my mind as best I could.
I didn’t want to think about what had happened too much. I didn’t understand it, and I had learned that trying to make sense of it by force wasn’t going to change anything.
I walked into the house and headed straight for the kitchen. The moment I stepped inside, the kitchen staff looked up from what they were doing.
“Good morning, Luna.”
“Good morning.”
I went over to the counter and reached for a bottle of water. I twisted the cap open and took a few hurried sips.
Almost immediately, my stomach turned. And I realised how unsettled I was deep down, no matter how hard I tried to brush it off.
I stopped drinking and lowered the bottle, swallowing hard as a wave of nausea rose suddenly in my throat.
I closed my eyes for a moment and took a slow breath.
Martha approached me.
“Luna, should I have your breakfast served now?”
I forced myself to straighten.
Before I answered her question, I asked, “Has Alexander come out this morning?”
“Yes, Luna,” she replied. “He left some minutes ago. He drove out himself.”
I nodded. I wondered if he was still in a bad mood when he woke up. But I wasn’t in the mood
to spend time thinking about that… I guessed I’d just find out when he returned.
“Alright,” I said. “Go ahead and have my breakfast served. I’ll be down shortly.”
“Yes, Luna,” Martha said.
I left the kitchen before she could say anything else and headed upstairs.
Chapter 617
The nausea hadn’t completely gone away. I kept the bottle of water in my hand as I walked, taking slow breaths and trying not to think about the uncomfortable feeling in my stomach.
When I reached our chambers, I went straight into the bathroom.
barely had time to put the bottle down before the nausea hit me again.
I leaned over the sink and threw up the water I had just drunk.
For a few moments, I stayed there with one hand gripping the edge of the sink while I waited for my stomach to settle. I closed my eyes and took several slow breaths, allowing the
discomfort to pass.
The image of the bleeding deer filled my mind again. I shook my head and splashed water on my face.
It took some minutes before I felt better.
Eventually, I straightened and rinsed my mouth.
I stared at my reflection for a moment, looking more tired than I had expected.
“It’s fine, Faye,” I murmured to myself.
I didn’t know whether I was trying to convince myself or simply dismissing the guilt I was feeling.
“It’s not about the deer, is it?” Nova asked softly.
I paused.
“What do you mean? You saw what happened out there,” I said.
Nova sighed.
“I saw. I also saw how hard you pushed. And now you’re beating yourself up… Is it really about the deer?” Nova asked again.
I thought about what she was saying. At that moment, it occurred to me that she was right. This wasn’t really about the deer.
Not entirely.
The realization came quietly, but once it did, I couldn’t ignore it.
Somewhere deep down, I hadn’t only been trying to save that deer because it was wounded. I had been trying to find out if I still had my gift.
Chapter 617
Because if I did…
Maybe there was still hope. My thoughts immediately went to Helen.
If my gift had survived whatever had happened to me at Stonevale, then perhaps I could do something for Helen. Maybe I could heal her. Maybe I could somehow save her from
whatever was killing her.
That was what had made me so desperate to make it work.
And when the deer died, it hadn’t only been the guilt of failing to save an innocent animal that had shaken me. It was the confirmation that I really did not have the one thing I needed to help Helen….
To save the woman who risked her life to save mine.
“You’re right,” I whispered.
I took a slow, deep breath and let it out. I took another breath, allowing my body to relax.
Then I stepped toward the shower and began taking off my clothes before stepping into the
shower.
The warm water helped wash away the sweat and the lingering tiredness from my body.
I stepped out and wrapped a towel securely around myself before walking back into the
bedroom.
I stopped when I noticed something on the bed… A piece of paper.
