Chapter 618
ALEXANDER
I checked my watch again.
The meeting had been going on for too long.
Normally, I wouldn’t have minded. Regional council meetings were important, and I understood why it sometimes took hours to reach an agreement when several packs were
involved.
Today, I simply had other things on my mind.
My mother’s health hadn’t left my thoughts since yesterday.
I had promised her that we would find a way, but I still didn’t know what that way was. I
needed to speak with her again today. I needed to understand exactly what was happening to her, whether there was anything that could be done…and where to begin.
Instead, I was sitting in a council meeting, listening to Alphas argue over an inter-pack agreement.
I checked my watch again before forcing myself to focus on the discussion.
One of the Alphas seated across from me was explaining why his pack had failed to fulfill its end of an agreement.
“The circumstances were beyond our control,” he said.
“Interesting,” Alpha Conrad said, even though he wasn’t the one being spoken to.
I looked toward him. He wasn’t looking at anyone in particular, but he was definitely trying to pass a message to someone.
I couldn’t care less about whatever was going on with everyone today. I was too distracted to pay that much attention.
“Some people have a very convenient way of explaining why their word suddenly means less when it’s time to honor it,” another Alpha said.
Conrad laughed.
“An agreement is made because both sides are expected to uphold it. If every failure can be excused by circumstances, then perhaps we should stop calling them agreements altogether. For me, I refuse to be taken for a fool…I would go to war if I have to,” Conrad said.

I frowned slightly.
I still wasn’t sure who he was referring to.
Before anyone else could respond, Alpha Jason spoke.
“I don’t think anyone is suggesting that agreements shouldn’t be honored.”
Conrad turned his attention toward him fully.
Jason leaned forward slightly.
“But circumstances can change. That’s the point you’re overlooking.”
Conrad raised an eyebrow.
“I’m overlooking?” Conrad asked.
“Yes.”
Jason’s voice remained calm.
“A pack can agree to provide something and genuinely intend to fulfill that agreement, only for something unforeseen to happen. That doesn’t automatically mean they deliberately
broke their word.”
“And what happens when everyone starts using unforeseen circumstances as an excuse?”
Conrad asked.
“Then we investigate it,” Jason answered without hesitation.
“You speak to them. You find out what happened. You don’t immediately assume they acted in bad faith.”
A few of the Alphas around the table began speaking among themselves.
Jason continued.
“Especially when we’re dealing with affiliated packs. If there is a breach of an agreement, there should be clear communication before consequences. We should at least give the other party an opportunity to explain.”
“And if the explanation isn’t good enough?” another Alpha asked.
“Then you decide what happens next,” Jason replied. “But you don’t start with punishment before you’ve even carried out a proper investigation.”
The discussion opened up again.

Different Alphas began offering their opinions, some agreeing with Jason while others argued that too much leniency could weaken the authority of inter-pack agreements.
I listened quietly.
I didn’t particularly enjoy agreeing with Jason.
But for once, he was making sense.
Eventually, when the arguments began circling the same points, I spoke.
“Alpha Jason is right.”
The room quieted.

He paused.
“I don’t remember Northridge receiving the same courtesy,” he added.
The room went quiet.
I didn’t need to ask what he meant. Every Alpha present knew what had happened.
Conrad had taken over Northridge after Patrick’s death. He had inherited the pack and everything that had followed. I was sure the pack was still trying to recover from the consequences of my fallout with the late Alpha Patrick.
