Holden offered a tight, forced smile.
Beatrice, completely oblivious, continued the conversation. "Before, whatever your brother tried to do ended in failure. It was all because of Vivian. She dragged him down."
Meanwhile, Owen had reached the inpatient garden courtyard, just across from the outpatient side entrance.
"Dad."
A familiar, small voice drifted over.
Owen turned his head. Near a flower bed by the entrance stood Jordyn Morgan. She had her back pressed against the tiled wall, her hands hidden behind her. Her lips were pressed in a tight line, and she was looking up at him timidly through large, dark eyes.
What was she doing here? Owen frowned.
Suddenly, he felt a sharp tug on his hand. He glanced over to see Yvonne glaring at him, her face dark as she rolled her eyes.
Message received.
Owen quickly pulled his attention back, wrapping his arm around Yvonne's waist and pulling her flush against his side. He guided her forward, completely ignoring the child.
As they walked past the flower bed, the little girl called out again, as if afraid he simply hadn't heard her the first time. "Dad..."
Owen stared straight ahead, carefully and tenderly escorting Yvonne up the steps.
"Why is she at the hospital?" Yvonne asked, clearly annoyed.
"Probably because her mother's crazy episodes got worse, and she's been admitted," Owen replied dismissively.
Yvonne glanced back over her shoulder. Jordyn was still standing by the flower bed, hands behind her back, her head turned to watch Owen walk away. The little girl's gaze was glued to his back.
Yvonne felt a sudden, sharp pang of insecurity. She touched her flat stomach. Owen was the father of her future children. He could only be the father of her children.
