"The bridge is burned. We are enemies now."
Lyndon looked thoroughly distressed.
Seeing him crumble only panicked Beatrice more. "Our textile business has been failing. We bet over half our fortune on this healthcare venture to make a comeback. Now what..."
She shot a worried look at Yvonne.
Yvonne immediately stepped up. "I'll talk to my dad when I get back. I'll ask him to put pressure on Vivian's father to back off."
Lyndon sighed in relief. "Thank you so much, Yvonne."
They really had lucked out with her. Her family had the muscle to protect them, and she was devoted to her husband's family. Owen's decision to divorce Vivian for Yvonne had clearly been the right move.
Yvonne then glanced at Holden, who was lying perfectly still on the bed like a corpse.
"Holden, you need to pull yourself together," she urged. "Focus on your recovery and get that cornea transplant as soon as possible."
"Mhm," Holden grunted.
Yvonne wrung her hands. "Iris-Adams Biopharma is just getting off the ground. We desperately need your leadership. We poured everything we have into this company. It's the family's last hope."
"Mhm." Holden remained utterly still.
It was finally time for the doctors to resume their shifts, so Beatrice and the rest of the family headed back down to the outpatient clinic.
Holden was left completely alone, trapped in his own darkness.
"Help me up," he demanded, tapping the mattress.
A bodyguard stepped in. "What do you need, Mr. Lockwood?"
"I need to use the restroom."
The bodyguard helped him sit up, swung his legs over the edge, and slid his shoes on before guiding him forward.
The hallway to the bathroom was incredibly narrow. As the two grown men tried to walk side-by-side, Holden's shoulder scraped against the wall.
"Careful, sir. We're here." The bodyguard twisted the doorknob.
Holden tried to step up, but his foot missed the slight elevation of the threshold. He stubbed his toes hard against the marble frame.
He hissed in pain.
The bodyguard quickly adjusted his grip, placing a heavy hand on Holden's back. "Duck your head a bit, sir, so you don't hit the frame."
Holden hunched over, dragging his injured leg as he squeezed inside. He had no idea where he was standing.
The bodyguard flipped the toilet lid up and guided him a few more steps. "Right here, sir. Just sit straight down."
